Help! in Italy on vacation and K10 won't take picture with DAL 55-300

Help, I'm in Italy on vacation and my K10 won't take a picture with my DAL 55-300 Lens. I can manual focus the lense but when I press the buton it doesn't try to auto focus or take a picture. I have a DAL 18-55 that works just fine. Even on manual focus it won't take a picture. Any suggestions? I tried cleaning the contacts and resetting the camera but neither seem to work.

Are the aperture contacts working properly, do you get data on your f-stop and shutter? Make sure the option under Settings: "Using aperture ring" is set to 2. Permitted (it's a feature for manual focus lenses but it might affect modern lenses with bad contacts)

Do you use a battery grip?
Maybe disconnect it if you do?

Ok with more playing if I press the lense lock button and barely turn the lense off the AF indication switches to MF and it will take a manual focused picture. Is that a contact issue?

I do get F-stop stop info but I don't get any shutter action when I press the button.

I own a K20, and it won't take a photo unless it can confirm focus (in AF mode). So I guess for some reason it can't communicate with the lens about the focus.

I would mount and unmount the lens at least 10-20 times, just to scrape off any possible dirt stuck to the contacts. Another option is to try to scratch the contacts with sandpaper/knife, to remove any possible dirt.

Per the web on the K10 both AFC and MF modes should allow you to fire the shutter without focus confirmation. But since MF isn't - I'm stumped.

Are you shooting at the extreme ends of the zoom range? I used to have that problem with my DA 18-250 shooting at the extreme long end, but if I backed the zoom off a hair the camera would fire. No idea what was causing it, but try it and see.

No it doesn't seem to matter what zoom range I use.

Find another Pentaxian and try the lens on their body?

Flip ALL the physical switches through their modes a few times (AF/MF, SR on/off, mode dial back and forth) -- it has been known to fix a problem once in a while if something is sort of stuck between modes. (especially AF/MF switch)
