I make my own straps with strap material from the internet or stores like Wal Mart in their fabrics/sewing materials area. I used the same thickness as was my strap that came with my cameras. I used the small plastic pieces that hold and regulate the length of the strap that came with the original strap also. If you can get strap material with the strength and the length you need, it can be really effective and safe.

I am just now reading this, but here is one more ideal on the cheap. Go to your local Army Surplus store and get a rifle sling strap.
