Damn Dampness

Sometimes I'll shoot at night, and frequently my camera will either stop working or some controls won't function. A couple of nights ago, the 4-way control wouldn't work completely. Pressing any of the four buttons would register, but the basic controls wouldn't come up, no WB, no drive mode, etc. I even turned the camera off once or twice, but that didn't help. This was with my K3.

Neither of my "go to" lenses are weather resistant, the Pentax 50-135, and a Sigma 17-50mm.

Actually, the pentax 50-135 is a weather sealed lens. Note the black rubber O ring on the mount.

Cold? That can change the battery characteristics.

I've shot if -40C with both my K20 and K5 without any adverse effects. I actually had frost on the back of the body from my breathe and not a thing happened to the camera.
These suckers are tough.

Nothing wrong with the battery or SD card; it just doesn't work properly.

Same issue when indoors? The 50-135 is a DA* lens and is weather sealed. The 17-50 is not but I've used mine in light rain once without any issues.

GAWD!
At least this problem wasn't caused by dampness, it was caused because I was in "AF 9" and I didn't realize that the Four-Way controls were moving the focus area. I never used the K3's info screen before, thinking that the little LCD would show the shift of the AF area if that was going on, but it doesn't. I thought I had read enough of the manual, but it looks like I wasn't as well versed as I needed to be.
