Opinion on acquired lens

I bought a used DA 40mm limited and when I was examining it I found that the protruding piece next to the aperture control bar was cracked. It did say in the description that the lens showed signs of usage but it did not say exactly where. So my question is, will this crack critically affect the performance of this lens or can I live with it if I am extra careful? Everything else seems to be ok.

I would return it. The lens probably was dropped or was mounted on a camera that was dropped.

If it works well I would ask for a partial reimbursement at least

I agree with Waterfall - It takes a fair bit of force to do that, well beyond normal wear and tear.

Used does not equal broken. I would return it for a refund and try again with another vendor.

Looking at the crack it seems to me the part might have been stuck back on after removal, may be somebodys tried to use the lens with another brand of camera, the lens is not a heavy weight so I can not see how dropping it would crack the blade, modern plastics are very strong, Polycarbonates and PFT'S, I always advise novices to photography, if some thing has a crack its had a real wack, and that can lead to lots of other problems.

What he said.

My original photography mentor gave me this piece of advice when I was first looking to buy a camera, "Never knowingly buy a lens or camera that has been dropped or has evidence of impact damage." What you can't see is often more serious than what you can.

I believe this is a metal part. The lens is the DA 40/2.8 Limited.

In that case it's even worse.

The cracked part is a protective flange for the aperture control, not the aperture control itself. As such, it does not necessarily hinder function.

BUT it indicates very hard use, possibly the lens being dropped, and if the crack propagates to the point where the guard gfalls off, it is now loose in the mirror box/ shutter area where it can do real damage

Send it back as not as advertised, or request refund from the seller,

If he lets you keep the lens take the guard off RIGHT NOW The lens will work fine without it
