problem with older lens when integrated flash is open

Hello All,
I own Pentax K50 and all seems is OK, but when I put film lens SMC 28/2,8 M in M mode, and I open the flash integrated in the body, I can't
increase the shutter speed more than 180. Is this normal ? In my opinion I must have possibility to change shutter speed, doesn't matter of the lens.

This is nornal. With the flash opened and thus turned on the fastest shutter speed is 1/180s, the so-called fash sync. speed. With manual lenses only the speed 1/180s can be set.

Refer to the camera manual page 242 to 247.

For most flexibility you need an A-series lens or an autofocus lens.

I'm not sure if an external flash makes any difference, i doubt it. Better to by an A-series (or newer) lens.

You can, it'll just always fire at full power so you have to exposure manually. 1/180s is the maximum flash sync speed.

Newer cameras like the K-S2 and K-3 let you manually set the flash power down to 1/128th I believe.

The only ways to control flash exposure if you

1 only have Non A lens
2 camera body flash does not offer power steps

Is to use the aperture to control exposure, This also means if your attempting to match/mix ambient your very limited in your options as you'll need to use aperture to control flash exposure but this is likle to require shutters outside the 0-1/180 especially in outside sun.

To counteract this to some degree you can use ND filters.

Your best bet though is to by a cheapo Manual/Auto flash there are plenty of modern units New on Ebay.
If you elect to buy an Older 2nd hand unit then ensure the shoe voltage is low as many old flashes have voltage in excess of 300V which will destroy your camera.!

Basically if your using Manual lens you need to be comfortable with Manual flash to use the internal flash
If you want some automation of your flash then Auto Thryister is the only option.

You can. Use base ISO and narrow aperture and even if you use external flash you can not raise your speed beyond 1/300 or somewhere near without getting a total black or cut out image. This is at least from my experience

thank you all.
in my opinion best decision in this case is to use modern lens, when I want to use internal flash.
I still can not understand why have to exist this limit ... if I can to increase shutter speed all will be easy and OK.
I have ND filter, but to use this way ... seems very complex and uncomfortable.
of course I can use and aperture ... but sometimes I want to take photos with aperture 2 ; 1,8 ; 1,4 - for portraits.
I just wondering - where is the problem is in me or in the camera
I own in the past another brand camera , and there do not exist this problem.
thank you again

This is interesting. What image did you get shooting at 1/400s with other brands? Were you using sensor smaller than micro 4/3?

I am referring to situations where ambient light is too weak and flash is almost the only light that matters and not just to fill in

The Nikon D7000 has a top flash sync speed of 1/250 with the built-in flash, the K-50 has a top flash sync speed of 1/180. If you want to use faster shutter speeds with flash you need a high-speed-sync flash. The built-in flash is not a high-speed-sync flash, it is limited to 1/180 because of the hardware. It is more expensive to make a 1/250 flash. Pentax do offers external flashes with high-speed-sync. Note here: They need electronic aperture coupling with the lens, because they need to know the aperture. A manual focus non-A lens (such as the M or K-series) does not have electronic coupled aperture so they are of limited use with this special function.

yes, I'll have to buy some new lens - for now, my only digital lens is 18-55 WR.
I have a lot of older lenses ... and I thought, that I'll have way to use them in church for example.
But I'll use 18-55 while buy some new one .
Thanks all for the answers
