Viewfinder uses phase detect auto focus (PDAF) in both cameras. Live view offers contrast detect auto focus (CDAF). K3 also adds focus peaking in liveview which helps with critical focus.

It can help a little bit. I haven't really needed it a lot. If you zoom in with live view, you can focus pretty accurately without (although I have it turned on on both my K-01 and K3).
I have a K50, but can't figure out how to zoom in live view.. It'd be nice to zoom live view when trying to focus on stars. Manual says to use the ok button, but it doesn't work. Can anyone help me out?

Maybe you need to activate it in a menu somewhere? Were you in MF mode when pressing OK? That's how it works on the K-3.

That was it! Thanks! I was looking in the manual under live view, it didn't say anything about manual focus mode there. I tend to forget I'm in autofocus because I use back button and have the nice quick shift lenses. Thanks so much!
