FA 28-80 f3.5-4.7 zoom ring

Hey guys,

I just bought myself a Pentax Z1P and got a FA 28-80 3.5-4.7 as a bonus. Way I understand it, it's not the best lens in the bunch. I still thought I'd try it, but I'm a bit turned off by the zoom ring. Feels very gritty and resistant when turned. Is this common, or should I try taking it apart and lubricating the ring or something?

Thanks!

No, that's not normal, but see if it gets better with use.

Hi Tickolas. If you want to keep that camera as your 35mm film alternative / backup, I suspect that you'll enjoy it. Regarding the FA 28-80 3.5-4.7, if the lens has what looks like a button on the zoom ring and you see the words 'Power Zoom' when you move the ring toward the front of the lens, you are the proud owner of a Power Zoom lens. The lens permits motorized zooming (which works with my K10D and is liked by both me and my son-in-law) and even preset zooming with many of the PZ series film cameras, in addition to manual zooming by sliding the zoom ring toward the camera mount. The bad news: the preset zooming was eliminated with the ZX / MZ film cameras and all the DSLR models (Why!?... excuse me). Otherwise, I still use my copy with good results. Search the web for a pdf of the FA-series Pentax lenses to get familiar with it and try at least a 58mm screw-in rubber lens hood. Enjoy.

Yeah, can't seem to get that feature to work. Looks like someone superglued the buttons at some point for reasons best left unknown. The round button's stuck, and the slider seems to do nothing.

Either way, after trying the Z1P out today I can't say I find it nearly as enjoyable to use as my LX. I'll finish up the roll and see if I decide to keep it or not.
