Do I Have 1000's of Hot Pixels?

Hello all,

Long time Pentax fan here. I just bought a new K-3 from B+H and I am (was) very excited...Ok, I'm still excited.

But this problem scares me.

I take a photo and it looks fine, then I zoom in and it has these bold points that look like hot pixels, but it's not one or two, it's thousands of them! So I do a pixel mapping. Afterwards the pictures look fine until I shut off the camera and turn it back on, now it seems worse than ever.

Also, for video there is a nasty set of moving/flashing vertical lines of dots that show up on the far left side of the frame when shooting dark objects, even in decent lighting. Did I get a factory defect, or do I just know far less than I think I do about this camera?

The attached photos show some of these artifacts.

I guess I'm asking if I should pack it all back up and send it to B+H, or am I missing something?

I'd say a lot of hot pixels. Unless that's supposed to be a picture of stars... Try to do the pixel mapping function and see if it improves... if not, send it back.

Have you done any adjustments in PP?

I think the photos are not straight from the camera.

Impressive!! Quality control fail!!!! That's a really messed up sensor !! To make sure, take several shoots of the same scene with different settings, if the hot pixels are all in the same place, send it back straight away!!!

Reset the camera factory settings and take a shot in jpeg format, then load it here without any PP adjustments.

That would make me so upset, I'd send a letter to Ricoh Corporate US and Japan with a huge complaint and kindly request that they get their cr*p together. I'm sure B&H will solve it for you quickly though.

You've got a clear cut dud. Don't persist with it, ask for a new one.

How are you zooming in? Do you see those spots on the camera LCD? That would definitely be a camera problem worthy of return.

Or are you zooming in with software on your PC? A software bug or settings could exaggerate hot pixels.

I also see a faint gray diagonal band in the samples. Light leak?

Did you mean get their crop sensor together? Maybe this was a prototype astro sensor where you get 10% more stars.

Seriously, I can't imagine it's possible to recreate what you're seeing with any settings and that at least one or more issues are in play.

Return it for an exchange, and test the replacement. Can you share the defective camera's serial #? It would be interesting if anyone on the forum has one within close production that can attest that they had the same problem or not.

Stitched seam in leather, I think. Looks weird on a laptop screen, better on my desktop monitor.
