Pentax Digital Camera Utility 5 (V5.4.1) problems

Hi all.

Some info first: Desktop PC, Windows 10, 64bit; Intel i7 CPU 3.07Ghz; Nvidia GTX670 graphics; 12GB RAM. Used for gaming (e.g.Far Cry 3&4, Tomb Raider, Dishonored) and runs all at High/Ultra settings. Runs Olympus Viewer 2 without any problems.

Photos are on my hardrive. When I try to use DCU5 my PC will slow; freeze; stop other programmes from working, etc. I don't understand this - perhaps DCU5/Silkypix is not compatable with Windows 10?

Using photos in JPG format.

Any ideas out there please?

Works without problems on both my Windows 10 laptop and on Windows XP desktop.

There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Any chance you've installed the 32-bit one by mistake?

I used the Silkypix version that comes with the camera years ago, but never seem to get much out of it. So I used Lightroom for years instead, but last year, I bought the commercial version of the Silkypix 6, I am quite impressed with the RAW development capability (skin tones, auto-noise reduction etc.). There is a promotion on now until Feb....as a suggestion only, perhaps, you can take a look at that.

How many pictures are in the folder you are working with?

I have found that PDCU becomes super slow and/or will freeze the whole computer above a certain number of pictures in the folder. This was with Windows 7.

When I last used it, I was using a computer that would have been similar to yours except my i7 processor would have been running around 3.8Ghz.

There have been a number of reports of crashes with DCU 5.4.2.For example:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/32-digital-processing-software-printing/3...y-5-4-2-a.html

Personally I advise to revert back to DCU 5.4.1 which is more stable IMO. I have used DCU v.5.4.1 for quite a while and I am overall happy with the outcomes.

It may be your video driver. I had a problem with high bit rate videos playing at the wrong frame rate and slowing the system down. The same videos played fine under Windows XP. I finally isolated the problem to the video drivers (nVidia CUDA - hardware acceleration) and after updating those everything works as it should. I don't know if PDCU uses graphics hardware acceleration but it might.

Thanks for the responses.

I can have anything from one to over a hundred photos in any one folder - date organised. It does not appear to make any difference to DCU's affects.

I have the same problems with V5.4.1 and 5.4.2

The video drivers are the latest.

I bailed on the Pentax software some versions back, when it did not have a spot-healing brush, and image rotation was by entering degrees. No idea what improvements PDCU may have had subsequently. Some people like it, more evidentally use something else. I went to Elements 6 ---> 9 --->11, now 13. It has been as low as $59.99. Has some handy features, and fair tagging (which I have stopped doing).

Silkypix studio 6 is available for £36, I might try the trial version and see how that goes.

I have Win 10 Pro 64 bit and no problems with DCU (5.4.2).
Fast and responsive, and giving better results than ACR.

I find DCU 5 extremely slow, slower than version 4 and it frequently hangs when batch processing 40-50 or more pictures. I tried to use it for a couple of months after I bought the K-3. It never performed acceptable so instead I turned to Lightroom. OK, Lightroom is not free but well worth the cost

Once you are at the point of paying for image processing software, it's worth trying several different ones to see which you like best, because people tend to get used to one program and stick with it.

Adobe Lightroom is probably the most used by PF members, but other programs like CaptureOne and DxO Optics Pro have many fans too. The core feature set is generally similar, but each program has unique features that appeal to particular users.

Personally, I like DxO OP. Its strong points include excellent noise reduction, automatic correction modules for supported lens and camera combinations (all but one of my lenses are supported), ViewPoint plugin for wide angle correction, ClearView, good single-shot HDR presets and so on. If you are interested in this program, act quickly because their sale is about to end: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/94-pentax-price-watch/310517-dxo-s-50-off...-dec-31-a.html

I've just Just tried the trial version of Silkypix Studio 6, it has the same issues. However, they do not say it's compatible with Windows 10, just Vista, 7 and 8. So that may explain the DCU5 problems. I've emailed them and asked the question re Windows 10.

Faststone works fine, but does not seem to have the same colour rendition as DCU5 - that seems to match the camera very well.

Not wishing to go off topic, but.............happy new year everyone.

Faststone shows the embedded JPG, if you did not change that.
Settings - RAW

2. Did you activate the Color Management?
