Composition-Pop photography - oversize-images

Originally posted on the forum 01-20-2011, links are broken etc. reposted with images posted on Picasa instead of Image Shack

During my years teaching photography this article, close to 25 years old was probably the most understandable. While it's probably fairly common to get the students working on different aspects of composition, and my students had to produce at least 3 photos making use of the elements, the principles and the rules, this article tended to put things in perspective in terms of their place in composition.. Before you get too critical of someone else's composition in the critique section.. you might want to read it. I've posted the cover, the rest click on the links to download if you're interested.

At the normal web viewing size, the images were not easily readable.

Rather than force everyone who clicks on the title to download the images, I'll just provide links to the images.

It's still my favourite after all these years. Detailed enough to touch all the issues, short enough to not mess with my ADD attention span.

Yes, do that...
I still read it from time to time.

It's a good refresher course, just in case you forgot what you were doing.

I'll have to see if that issue is in my basement. I'd like to read the computer article for a laugh...Photoshop was 2 years old at that point...I graduated high school the month that magazine would have been on the shelves...

BTW Norm, I've learned more things from you and the rest of the forum than I have in a photography course I'm doing for school...

Being a former tech teacher, I can sympathize. I used to tell my students (If you were my apprentice in a cabinet shop, I could teach you more in 6 weeks, that you'll learn if you take this course for 3 semesters." When you teach to a group, you have to teach to the slowest least comprehending member of that group. And your smart people are bored.

Being on online course I can do it my own time, finished it very quickly.
In the end I already new everything, and the teacher had never heard of Pentax

Great stuff! It's nice to see some good thought put into explaining effective composition. All I ever hear photographers talk about in terms of composition is the rule of thirds. There's a whole slew of design fundamentals that they ignore by keeping to just the rule of thirds.
