That's unfortunate! How long have you had the lens? I would do quick fixes over screw drive, I do quick fixes on my 5 year old DA* 16-50 for a year and a half since it failed. I don't want to do screwdrive yet because I like the light squeekie noise over hearing loud gear wheels moving back and forth. My 16-50 might actually came alive again without quick fixes because it's been a week since I don't have to quick fix it.

EDIT: The easiest quick fix is to hold the AF button down for a couple of seconds then let go, then repeat over and over until it runs again.

I have a 16-50 and 300 converted to screwdrive. I can say that the noise isn't as loud as I expected. Whether it's faster or not I can't tell.

Six years ago I let my 17-70 to be repaired (SDM motor exchange in the local Pentax service).
It costed me about $100. Since then the lens works perfectly. I like it a lot.

The 50-135 seems to have this problem very often. I think that the series of the SDM motors are reliable.

I had my SDM 50-135 repaired twice.

The motor seems to be under-sized for the lens and so tends to over-work.

As I claimed this was a defect, Pentax only invoiced me part of the cost, either the service or the parts, I can't remember.

Try moving the focus first manually, and then with the motor. Maybe the protective joints are getting harder when not used for a time.

If you don't wish to convert it yourself; a member here does this very reasonably!

(I'm not associated with this member, simply glad someone does this for the membership)

That might fix it for a while but at one stage it just won't wake up
I would do the conversion as others (including myself) have done.

Good luck

I'd be interested in knowing that as well. I've only recently had experience with SDM and was totally unaware that at least sometimes when the SDM files, the manual focus ring completely decouples (basically operates in permanent "soft stop" mode), leaving the lens completely unusable.
