HELP! Auto-focus on K-x *suddenly* not working!

Hi,

I have a K-x that I haven't used in awhile (several weeks, maybe) and I was checking it today because one of my kids wants to borrow it for an upcoming trip, but when I tried it with my 18-55mm AF zoom, it wasn't auto-focusing. I checked the and MF/AF switch is on AF.

I also tried several other known good (just tried them on my K-r) AF lenses and they don't auto-focus on the K-x.

A couple of things:

- When I press the shutter button, the whole LCD blinks continuously

- The LCD is displaying "F---" even though I have an AF lens attached. Shouldn't that be showing the aperture?

Is there some setting or something that I'm missing that might have prevented AF from working?

Thanks,
Jim

EDIT: I did check the batteries and they are ok. I'm charging a new set of NIMH AA batteries to try again, just in case.

Often the "F---" indicates the lens mount contacts need cleaning, or are not connecting properly.

F_ _ _ means the camera cannot see the lens. Make sure the lens is in the 'A' position if available. Clean the contacts on lens and camera. A light buffing with a micro fiber cloth is usually all that is needed.

try pressing the af switch in the back of the camera, if not set it up that way and try it

After looking at the camera lens mount and making sure they are not dirty or damaged, you don't have much else to check. It might be that the camera mount is damaged somehow and repairing a K-x would probably cost more than buying another K-x, or even something like a used K-50. Cameras don't last forever

Edit: Other things you can do is take out battery, charge it, leave it outside camera for some hours, reset camera, update firmware.. sometimes these things can "nudge" the camera back to work right; but I doubt it will help in this case

The contacts on the AF/MF switch may be worn or dirty. My K-x does this from time to time. I've been able to get AF working again by jiggling the AF/MF switch, whereupon I resolve to avoid manual focusing, until I forget and flip the switch and- here we go again. It's got a KatzEye screen, so when the day comes that AF won't come back, I'm going to assign the K-x to manual focus lens duty only.

Na Horuk,

Yes, the "F---" was because I had forgotten that the lens was not set to "A", but at the end, that wasn't what was causing the non-AF behavior and the blinking LCD...

Na Horuk and THoog,

This is going to sound dumb, but the main problem was that I had apparently configured the shutter button to not do the focus. I vaguely recall doing thing, but I don't remember exactly how I did it, but I set the button in the corner to lock focus and then also disabled the shutter button half-press from doing AF.

So that's why it wasn't auto focussing when I pressed the shutter button. I'm not 100% sure what is causing the LCD to blink, but if I press the corner button to do the focus, then press the shutter button, it takes a pic and the LCD doesn't blink.

Thanks,
Jim
