Bower flash strobing on K-50

I don't do much flash photography, so I've not tried using my Bower SFD926P flash with my K-50 (bought last year) until a few days ago.

At first it wouldn't work at all, and then it would periodically fire a whole series of quick strobing flashes...scared me that it might send electric current through the K-50 and fry it. It did do a couple of proper flashes, and then went back to strobing.

Any ideas on what's going on? If I need a flash, I much prefer a hot-shoe flash to the built in.

BTW, if I turn on the flash, let it charge up and use the test button, it fires normally.

Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem with that flash on a K-R in 2012. I haven't tried it with my K-50, I just assumed it wouldn't work on anything newer than a K-X.

So, the good news is, your camera and the flash are probably okay, they just don't get along.

The bad news is, now you have to buy an older camera to use this flash with. Bummer.

It is unfortunate, but compatibility of third-party flash is limited to the ability of the makers to reverse engineer the Pentax P-TTL protocol. Pentax, for obvious reasons, does not publish the full details of the protocol and third-party product that work well with older cameras often fail when mated to newer bodies.
