Does it sag more than you can or want to deal with? If so then yes. It definitely makes longer lenses easier to handle when your setup is balanced but with a beefy enough ball head you can get by without. I have a A* 300/4 that I use without a tripod collar, I just need to keep the ball head tight and anticipate a couple of mm's worth of sag. It's workable. The DA* 60-250 has a tripod mount and this makes it easier to handle when mounted with no noticeable sag.

I think that you most certainly will benefit from a lens tripod ring. It makes handling much easier and it's a must if you're thinking about getting a gimbal head.

An alternative would be the manfrotto 293 lens support. Not cheap mind you...

The tripod mount as it comes as a standard with the DA* 4/60-250 and the DA* 4/300 is highly recommended. Not only will it make aligning the lens on a tripod much easier but it is also the easiest method to change from landscape to portrait orientation without high torque on a ballhead).

Was there ever a tripod mount available for the 300mm f4? If there was...I missed it. But that's not saying much because I miss a lot of things. lol

There is more than one 300mm f4.

Which one???? DA* ? That's the one I'm talking about but I'm not clear if that the one the OP has.

Another universal option.

If it is the Pentax SMCP-DA* 300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR it should include a tripod collar/foot. If that is the model you received new, you may want to contact the seller.

Yeah, but you'd have to go to a LOT of trouble to remove the tripod mount from the DA 300mm f4. That's why I'm assuming that it was one of the previous incarnations of the 300mm f4 that didn't come with a collar.

"The tripod mount is missing but it looks like there is a place for one"
They never say ring. It could be the foot.

do i need a troipod mount

Sorry,,,,,,,,,,,the lens I have is an SMC 300mm f4.0 MANUAL lens. (non DSLR) also not DA FA OR *,, it looks like its has a spot for a mount..
it did not come with one or when it was retail ,,,,,,,,,,but should i still get one...
the tripod mount I have is the MATTON BM-20 it can carry a 25lb. load,,,,,my camera ( K200d + 300mm) is no where near it and the mount holds everything without sagging, and when I need to go vertical or to move it,I loosen the mount,
hold the the lens and reposition it quite easily..

I have, I believe, the same lens and it has it's tripod ring. A rather substantial piece considering that the lens is only about 7" long with a 3" diameter. The only thing I added was a new lens plate to match up with the quick release clamp on the ball head.

the K/300 does not have a tripod ring, nor a spot on the lens for a ring/collar.... the Manfrotto solution, as Uncle Vanya suggested above, is probably the easiest way to fix the need for a tripod ring for this lens and it would be available for other lens in the future....
