That was my concern as noted above. Taking shots like those is not something you just buy a camera and take some snapshots and they come out great. Well, it isn't for me anyway. To get good shots of fast moving things you need good gear, good instincts, good skills and lots and lots of practice.

You could certainly get those shots with a k-50 and the DA 55-300 but for me to get that good I would expect days of practice and literally 1,000s of shots taken. Even with a lot of experience you will get maybe one keeper out of 50 to 100 shots taken. But you get no where without starting so I suggest you post some pictures and ask for advice. There are folks on this forum who have been shooting for 50 years and more, so lots of experience.

No you won't. Just ask. No one has any idea of your level of experience. If a term is confusing just ask, or google it. Like any profession photography has a lot of terms that define the parameters of things. If you don't know them it can be confusing. But no one is going to call you an idiot for asking if you really don't know.

Since you apparently know horses you will have a big step up over someone like me. Knowing the 'game' or 'action' and being able to be in the right spot at the right time to get the shot is a huge part of this.

Another thing though is that people coming from a point and shoot often think: bigger, more expensive camera = easier to take pictures. That is absolutely not true, the bigger and more expensive the cameras the harder it is to get good pictures. I would expect the first week or so you will feel like going back to your P&S as nothing will be coming out good. There is a learning curve and at first it seems nothing goes right. Just work through it, concentrate on getting simple, in focus pictures of something perfectly still, like a fence post or a rock. When you can do that 90% of the time, then try for something moving.

I want to be able to take photos like this:

Just ask what you don't understand.
I hope I didn't post anything that wasn't clear. Photography has lots of quirky abbreviations, I try to keep up, its not always easy.
