lens problems

I have recently acquired a k20d and I am having problems with a lens, smc pentax-f 1:4.7-5.6 80-200mm, while I get great results with it at most times I can not seem to figure out why when I zoom to maximum it fails to focus correctly, any advise would be greatly appreiciated, thank you.

Can you post a picture (with EXIF intact)? What is the lighting like when this happens?

it fails to focus correctly,
You might expand on this a bit. Does it fail to focus at all? Focus in the wrong place? Hunt and have trouble locking focus?

As @UncleVanya asks, what is the lighting like? Note that this lens is a variable aperture so when you zoom all the way out it will open only to f/5.6 which in poor light might be marginal for auto focus.

As my moiker suggests I am just getting started, I have tried it in VERY bright situations and it fails to focus at all, and could you please inform me about EXIF, thank you very much for replying.

Sure - EXIF is the metadata the camera records along with the image data. If you edit the files in some editors this information is lost - so the easiest option is to just upload some imagers right out of the camera - a failed focus shot and a successful focus shot (made in the same lighting - one at 200mm and one at a shorter focal length where it is working).

Here's a link explaining EXIF in more detail:
