Bad luck but fortunately it is an easy and quick fix.
I'm currently waiting for my local shop for the fix.

What was actually the problem(s) that the dial caused?

The dial due to bad contact lost its ability to change modes and it was stuck in default manual mode regardless of the mode the selector was turned to.

You can take a look here:

I looked at pg.11 does that mean only K1’s that have a serial number that start with 6359 are affected? I leave both my K1 and K1 mkii in manual since I use old glass with them, so I wouldn’t know if I did have a problem with the mode dial?

Mike I can't remember all the S/N that were affected but I remember that they were all from the same 1-2 batches. If you look further in other pages you will see what I mean.

Anyway I don't feel this is something you should worry about. Even if your K-1 is from that batch the repair is simple and fast. I would turn from time to time the knobs and they would show Av (or maybe Tv) on the other settings not only M....

This is my K-1 serial number:
6362088
The dial died after about one year use and was fixed.
OK since then.

Mine is still OK but I do worry about getting it fixed out of warranty now if it goes... If I remember correctly I am just barely outside the serials that have been posted so far...

Just to recap from posts on 28 Sept 2017, my K-1 was purchased in September 2016, serial number is 6356267 (don't forget to look in the K-1 Serial Number Database).
- It suffered the mode dial failure after 12 months in September 2017, fixed by Ricoh via Cardiff Camera Centre in one week, no charge.
- It suffered the "K-1 won't turn on" failure (K-1 won't turn on) a few weeks later, fixed by Ricoh via Cardiff Camera Centre in one week, no charge (2 year warranty).
Been working perfectly ever since, if that's not a hostage to fortune.
So I'm a happy bunny, with paws crossed.

Are there any spare parts available in case I want to DIY this repair?

Yet, they have replaced Ari's camera.

I'd call that pretty good service.
Pretty good service? After "many phone calls and emails"? You must be used to a pretty low bar.

The OP's camera broke. The camera was to be repaired and that repair would have taken a month. The OP was not happy with that and managed to get the issue resolved by having Ricoh agree to a replacement rather than a repair. I consider that a pretty good outcome.

But, more interestingly than any of that: You're quoting a post of mine from 2016 in a dead thread.

For the record, I still consider it good service, 5 years later.

I've potentially bought a K-1 with this issue but it seems that most K-1 cameras susceptible to the problem have either never been used enough or have already had a repair sorted. There are very few new topics describing the issue or the solution.
