K-5 firmware update?

I just tried to update firmware on new ( to me ) k-5 ll.
Didn't work.
Version of firmware already on camera: 1.00
Downloaded file: k5_2_107
Tried to open it to separate .bin file from .readme and could not. My Win 7 machine
tried to install k5_2_107.exe as a program.
When I unzipped it with ( 7 zip ) it broke down to fwdc216b.bin. but there was still no .readme to separate.
Copied fwdc216b.bin to formatted micro schc card anyway and installed card, battery in my camera.
Held down menu, turned on and message on camera just said: version 1.00, and gave me status of camera settings.

I'm no computer expert certainly, and learn mostly by trial and error, but I did assemble this computer from scratch
and installed Win 7 Pro ( several times ) on my own, so I do have some experience.
I have read directions on this site for downloading and installing firmware ( several times ) and watched the video ( nice one )
several times and don't know what I've done wrong.
I realize it may be where I can't detach .bin from .readme but I don't know how to fix this.
I have used zip extractors in the past and a .readme always comes up as one of the extracted files, but this is supposed
to be self-extracting.

Help...

Camera worked fine before attempt at upgrade and still does.

thanks for whatever hopefully simple thing i'm missing, AdkMike

Full text of K-5 firmware readme. Should be the same for K-5 II...

===========================================================================
PENTAX K-5 Firmware Updating to Version 1.16
===========================================================================

* Firmware is the software that runs inside digital cameras.

Updatable models
K-5 digital SLR cameras running Firmware Ver. 1.00/1.02/1.03/1.10/1.11
/1.12/1.13/1.14/1.15

How to check version
Turn the power on while pressing the MENU button.
The Firmware version is displayed for about 5 seconds at the center
of the LCD monitor.
Perform the above operation without inserting the SD/SDHC card
containing Firmware in the camera.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * [Caution] * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Be sure to use fully charged battery (D-LI90 or 90P)
If the camera turns off during updating due to lack of battery power, the
camera will become inoperable. If this happens, a charge will be made for
repairs even if within the warranty period.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Updating Procedure

1. Provide a formated SD/SDHC memory card for the update software (with at
least 32MB of available memory space).
The downloaded file is self-extracting.
The following files are extracted.

readme.txt : this document
fwdc209b.bin : Firmware

Copy the above Firmware file [fwdc209b.bin] to the root directory in
the SD/SDHC card.
If your computer does not have a card slot, you can copy the firmware
update file by inserting the SD/SDHC card into your camera and then
connecting the camera directly to your computer.

2. Insert the D-LI90 battery into the camera and confirm the battery is full
by battery level indicator then turn the camera off.

3. Insert the update SD/SDHC card (prepared in step 1) into the camera
and close card cover.

4. Turn the camera power on while pressing the MENU button.

5. "NOW LOADING" appears in the LCD monitor, and will change to the
"PROGRAM UPDATE". At the bottom of the LCD monitor,

CURRENT VERSION 1.00/1.02/1.03/1.10/1.11/1.12/1.13/1.14/1.15.
UPDATE VERSION 1.16

will be displayed.

6. Press the four-way controller to select "YES" and press the "OK" button.

7. "UPDATING" appears on the LCD monitor and updating starts.
Please do not under any circumstances switch off the power before the
update is completed.
It will take approximately 90 seconds to complete update.

8. When update is completed, the "COMPLETE" will be displayed at the left
bottom of the LCD monitor, then turn the camera off.

9. Remove the update SD/SDHC card from the camera.

10. To check the Firmware version in your camera, turn the camera on while
pressing the MENU button.
Check that the version displayed in the LCD monitor is "Ver.1.16"
The camera automatically starts up after about 5 seconds.

(Caution)
When updating is finished, the update SD/SDHC card still contains the
Firmware file.
If you want to use this card to take pictures, delete the Firmware file
first.

Make sure the .bin file is in the root directory of the SD card and not in a folder. There is no read me file that I've ever seen in any firmware update/.bin file. Why are you looking for a .readme file anyway? You don't need it.

I was too slow.

Yes, I've read this. Problem is .bin and .readme did not extract so I could separate them.

I can't dig down to find the root directory.
Good to know at least that I'm not the only one who doesn't see a readme file.
I will try again to dig deeper into the sd card.

Thanks

Memory card shows a folder named DCIM and that's all.
Shows folder is empty.
The card itself shows as: K5 ll with only the above folder in it.

Correct on the it showing the DCIM but that is not what we're saying. The .bin file needs to be outside the DCIM folder. Outside the DCIM folder is the "root" directory. So, if you had the card in the computer and opened it, like any other file/folder on a computer, you would see two entries, the DCIM folder, and the .bin file.

'root' directory is the top level, no folders. Just copy the .bin file to the SD card and do not put it into a folder.

Also, make sure you have the correct file for your camera, they are different for the k-5II and k-5IIs. Fwdc216b.bin is the correct one.

Success

I guess I should have mentioned that file management has never been something I'm good at.
"dumbing it down" is sometimes necessary for me, 'though, so thanks to all.
Now running v. 1.07

The EXE file is a self-extracting archive. The only contents is the BIN file. Double clicking on the EXE file pops up a dialog box for an install directory. Clicking ok extracts the BIN file to that directory.

If the file does not extract try running as the Administrator or check you Internet Security (firewall/virus scanner) setting.

That's what I said after I built my first house. Unfortunately there are a lot of things you only do once. or at least very infrequently. Which is why these forums are so valuable.

I don't mean to be impertinant, but at garage sale prices, isn't that a foolish question???
