I suspected that may be the case.

But.

I have replied to a few of this guy's questions in an attempt to help him, but so far he has failed to respond.
Oh yes it is the focus screen, I keep accidentally calling it a lense. It's the focus screen.

Not wishing to be rude - I'm just interested -why do you keep asking questions here when the Canon forum, which you have been given links to, would be much better placed to help you? The people here will try to answer your questions, and some own or have owned Canon cameras and might know a bit about them, but many more people will have more knowledge on the Canon forum - it just seems the more sensible place to ask!

And save the toothpaste for oral hygiene.

My camera won't take pictures in auto focus , how do I fix this??

My camera won't take pictures in auto focus after I put some toothpaste on my focus screen in attempt to clean it, was that a mistake? Help please.
What on earth possessed you to do that. Anyway clean the focus screen with soap and water ,and allow it to dry with the help of a rocket blower . and then inspect you mirror and the secondary mirror which is under the primary mirror . You can get to it by slowly lifting the primary mirror. if they aren't dirty leave well enough alone. And then again lift the primary mirror and below it , directly below it not behind it is a focus sensor .Clean it. good luck. Oh clean it with alcohol and q-tips ,do not clean your focus screen this way though. and don't worry about and strands you might leave behind, it almost never happens ,I know cause I clean my Sensor this way.Even if you do leave a fiber behind blow it.

I never use toothpaste on my focus screen....a good water-pik is all you need...and you can do the sensor at the same time. If you use Listerine, don't use the blue tint, it will give your shots a blue color-cast.

Reminds me of the time at DPR I recommended a guy clean his DS sensor with those water wands at the car wash. He did...and of course it fried his camera...but I got a two week ban. The real idiot was the jerk that banned me. Maybe it was his brother that went to the car wash???
