I suspect the KAF4 mount is designed to eliminate the issue by having the aperture close down using a totally different system.

Perhaps, in part. I think that it is important to remember that KAF4, as with KAF3, is "lens only" in terms of physical characteristics. Current KAF4 supporting bodies are physically and functionally KAF2 (crippled) with augmented command protocols to support in-lens focus and aperture motors. It is my opinion that the main benefit of KAF4 to Ricoh is in lens manufacturing. With KA, KAF, KAF2, and KAF3 lenses the diaphragm mechanism must be calibrated and tested to spec with each lens. The requirements for mechanical precision and assembly are high. Moving to a electromagnetic actuation allows for increased automation and streamlined calibration/testing.
