This is called wisdom (or experience). I do about the same. Make certain everything transferred properly, back that up then delete. If it is an important job I even set the SD card aside in case I find hidden flaws along the way! This is why I miss film (sometimes). If the shutter fired, then there is SOME THING on the film! Processing still could cause issues though!

Carol, just cycle the camera on/off with no card in slot #1 but a card in slot #2. Slot #2 will become the default and #1 will be the secondary. This is a little weird and I would have liked to see a way to select the card you want but the only way to do it is to trick the camera.

Glad you got your issue resolved and as a rule of thumb I always format cards in camera.
