Converting PEF files

Took bunch of pef files yesturday and my niece in law want a copy as they of her daughter.

The camera took RAW as I forgot to change to jpeg for her.

I have a mac and do not have the pentax browser or laboratory.

seems to be no download on pentax site only and updater.

How do I convert batch as there lots to do.
will take too long do each one in the camera.

thanks guys

There is a program called 'instant jpeg from raw'... google it and you can convert batches of RAW files to jpegs.

I use a free download called Adobe Camera RAW and DNG Converter. There are various versions for Mac or Windows and constant updates depending on your camera model. Hereʻs a link if you use Mac.

I think you can import PEF into the Photos app and then export a jpeg of the image.

Great, youʻve got a Mac. So now that youʻve converted the PEF to DNG, Photos (or iPhoto) when importing DNG files will convert them to jpeg. If not, there is a free patch online that fixes that on Photos or iPhoto.

Yeah, Adobe DNG converter PEF to DNG (use a lower compatibility number if later steps don't work). Then convert DNG to JPG with Apple software (or other). Don't try to export embedded jpegs, just convert them...

In camera is actually really fast, as the camera is a dedicated image processing machine. You can just process the entire folder 'as shot', no need to process one at a time.

Good point! (I never think of that because I only use RAW.)

did not know about "as shot"

However I did convert using "photos" app in the end.

I then spent 2 hours rotating them 90 degrees lol

Very useful when travelling and you want to upload a folder of jpegs to the internet, but were shooting in RAW and only have access to your hotel's computer or an internet cafe. No need to install the software on the hotel's computer!

The dcraw utility is able to extract the preview JPEGs from the PEF and DNG files as batch process from the Windows command window:
dcraw -e *.dng
dcraw home page:
Decoding raw digital photos in Linux
dcraw executables:
dcraw
