Bogen Tripod 3001 head? What the???

I have recently acquired this tripod and would love to use it...however I have no idea what that head is used for and would like to know if and how I can maybe replace it with a traditional head to hold my DSLR..

It looks like one of their old "3D" heads but is missing the platform.

There should be 3 or 4 grub screws on the bottom of the head on the column. Loosen those and you should be able to unscrew the head and replace it. The screw on the post should be one of the standard sizes that are used by most tripod heads.

The number on Bogen tripods can be confusing as they sold the legs and heads in kits that sometimes have different numbers than when sold separately.

What is the model number on the head? It appears to be a support for something that is no longer there.

That is what I thought at first except that the second section should be the platform! (I have an old 3028 on the counter next to the computer )

Definitely missing the platform to attach the camera. Here's a photo of one of my heads with all the right parts. Bogen-Manfrotto will probably be your cheapest source for the missing piece. Otherwise you could replace the entire head assembly.

I can't guarantee the parts are compatible but you can get it from Manfrotto for $31.90

or you can buy a complete used head from B&H for $27.95

As said earlier look under the bottom side of the column for any screws that might lock the head in place. Remove them if the are there. Then tighten the bottom collar so the head won't turn freely. Then try to twist the head off the column.

Thanks for the info...I'll look into it! Hoping to get some use out of this. I know its a quality piece of equipment and worth getting it all back together.

I have the 3001 with the 3025 head/platform assembly. I bought them both together new over two decades ago. You may want you use a head that gives you more versatility, but the 3025 or its replacement counterpart do work. You may find yourself doing a lot of screwing/unscrewing if you use it (the 3025) as opposed to using something such as a ball head.

There are three screws on the underside of the base of the tripod. They are flat headed screws (can move with with a flat headed screwdriver).
