Pentax Newbie. Help needed

Hi all,

I am on a very limited budget but have managed to find a K100d (not super) for $280 used in great condition. Before I buy it I was wondering if you all could recommend to me a cheap lense to get me going. I don't need super zoom, I'm going to start with mainly landscape pictures and pictures of the kids etc.
I'd like to keep the price down. I see many lenses out there but do not have the knowledge to know which one would be a good starter lense for me.

Thanks so much.

Ian

Maybe the Pentax kit lens DA f3,5-5,6 18- 55 mm AL would suit You. It should be fairly inexpensive and quite usable for landscapes and kids (tele-end will not get You very far but it is better than nothing). Mark II (second version of this lens) is better but nark I You will probably find second-hand very cheap.

Get the 18-55 kit lens. It will work great for what you want and is not expensive.

For the price and quality, kit lens (18-55) is the way to go if you are on a budget. It will get you started and later you can always upgrade.

Thanks so much guys. How do I recognize the kit lens when it is advertized? Also what is a good price to pay for it?
sorry for all the questions! You are all most helpful.

I found it new on Amazon for $105. You think used is much cheaper or just go with the new?

Thanks to everyone for their help. I got a lens within 10 mine of posting! Hopefully it's always this easy.
Can my non super take only certain lenses? I was looking at a lens that was just announced and it stated that you needed the k100d super. Is this true?

Any lens that requires SDM (Sonic Drive Motor) contacts will not work on your K100D. Only K100D Supers and newer bodies will drive the SDM lenses.

To clarify this, some lenses have both screw and SDM focus drives, and will work on any dSLR. Both my DA* lenses fit this description.

Hi all,

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help today. I will in a couple of days be the excited owner of a used (new to me!) K100D and the kit lens that a fine member here sold to me. You all are most helpful and I look forward to learning more as I grow in experience with my camera.

Thanks again,
Ian

Well, please define "not working". Light is still getting through the lens. All exposure methods still work. Manual focusing is possible. Only autofocus will not work if you get a lens with SDM (engine in the lens) and no screw connection (to transfer motion from the engine in the house into the lens).

Now you need to find yourself some cheap manual focus lenses with K bayonet or even m42...watch out, that kit lens might have been infected with LBA
