SMC Takumar 400mm F5.6 help needed to fix!

Hi
I bought the above vintage lens a while ago. I disconnected the front lens section from the rear spacing section but I can't get the two back together again!!
The thread in the front section obviously did mate with the rear but I can't for the life of me get the two to screw back together again. I'm beginning to think that it might be impossible! I've tried heating/cooling but no joy. Any help or suggestions gratefully received!
Thanks
Louise

First examine every tooth and valley to make sure there are no burrs or that there is no tooth that needs to be matched to a specific valley. Timing Mark ???
For a precise line up you'll never get it by holding in your hands. I've always placed the heaviest part face down on a table and then lowered the other part on to it.
Then slowly and gently turn it.
If it has a timing tooth and valley they will need to be close before you turn.
Good Luck.

Hi
I guess you mean the two lugs and channels they match up with? I've actually unscrewed the lugs in the hope of making things easier... Is that a mistake? Both screw and threads seem clean. I've been thinking that it requires some special tool though, on the face of it, the two parts ought to just screw back together...
Thanks very much for your reply - much appreciated.

If the threads are very fine it's difficult. If it unscrewed without special tools it should reassemble in the same way.
I have never been into the 400mm so my suggestions come from other lens tear downs. Don't know what the lugs are that you loosened.
DCShooter is a forum member that works with a lot of lenses, there's another member too that has some knowledge, can't remember the name.
They may chime in if they see this thread.

Turn the threads counter clockwise slowly until you feel a click, then try to screw them back together. Sometimes that helps. It may take more than one try.

Hi
Thanks for your help Pentaxus - tried your suggestion. It does sort of click when turned anticlockwise but then 'jumps out' again if I try to go the other way . There is obviously a knack to this! I'll persevere. If I'm successful, I'll post back.
Here are a couple of pics of the beast:

Thanks Phil but I'm in the UK! Anyways, it's not really worth paying to get it repaired.

Thanks but it didn't cost much so wouldn't be worth the extra expense. I actually have my eye on an f4.5 500mm version.
