Is there a 24mp crop option for the K-1?

It seems like a 24mp option would be helpful to squeeze a little more out of some DA lenses right on the edge of FF.

Hi ne!. As the crop option on the K-1 ( 15mp ) uses a portion of the 36mp sensor, in order to get 24mp in crop mode, the FF sensor would need to 50mp plus. So no, 24mp in crop mode not possible........ YET !! Only option I think is to crop FF images to remove any vignetting.

Technically, no. But in real world use you would just shoot your DA lenses in FF mode and crop to suit on the computer. Better than an arbitrary 24mp "crop mode" because you can then use each lens to it's fullest, and that varies a lot from lens to lens.

Techically, the square crop is 24 MP. But obviously a completely different aspect ratio.

No, but its actually easy to have a 1.2x (or whatever ) crop set as a custom Preset in LR and just apply it on the images.

That's actually really a nice option that I see a lot of people posting shots from. And since It is a crop mode and does squeeze more from the DA lenses and might be acceptable to the op.

As pointed out by Jens, the 1:1 crop is indeed 24 MP, and I highly recommend it. Many DA lenses are just fine in that format, including the DA 40 Ltd, DA 70 Ltd, and DA 55-300, all of which are very close to being FF. Most interestingly though, the DA 15 Ltd can be used in 1:1 mode (with vignetting only in the extreme corners), provided the hood is not pulled out.

As many MF photographers will attest, the square format can be very attractive and effective for a whole range of subjects.

I see no advantage in doing anything other than shooting full size and cropping after. You can do it, but it's going to cost you, when you crop image you could have used. I prefer the option to decide to use a 16:9 crop horizontally to crop away vignetting. Using a 1:1 crop would take way that option.

Out of interest, now that the 1:1 crop has been restored to factory bodies via firmware, do you get a viewfinder framing indication on the left and right edges or do you have to sort-of guess?

There were videos that came out almost as soon as the camera did, showing what the viewfinder would do, but that's before they put the 1:1 crop back in.

You get the framing indicator in the viewfinder if you switch to 1:1. No guessing needed.

Out-freeeaking-standing. They must have had it in there all along as a carryover from the prototype and just not activated it (or planned to do so when demand was sufficient).

I think someone said it was there in the early firmware builds but gone in the 1.00 production release, only to come back as an update.

In my IT experience, this indicates a bug discovered just before the launch date.
