Any K-70 users of Opteka Achromatic 10x diopter macro lens?

Hi, I wasn't planning to buy a macro lens but this one on Amazon seems to be getting good reviews and the price is definitely right at $24.95. What do you all think? Thanks

This looks like more of a filter than a lens. The difference is that a filter cannot mount directly to the camera. It mounts on a lens' filter threads.
In the past, Raynox was considered the only really good macro filter. Maybe they have competition now. I have not tried them, though

I've tried these and the ones labeled "Zykkos", "Digital Concepts", and a host of other names. Generally, they are optically poor performers. LOTS of CA, bubbles in the glass, distortion, ad infinitum. Those made by Raynox (DCR150 & DCR250) are the only ones that have provide me with any semblance of image quality. But, they are very touchy to work with as they have a VERY shallow DOF. Extension tubes and reversal rings are something else I've used and had better success.

YMMV.

Raynox 150 and 250 are great as are the Nikon 4T and 6T and Canon 500D versions.

I think it would be $25 + shipping a waste of money IMHO

If you stop down (f8 to f22) when using the Raynox versions, DOF is not shallow. I've used both adapters for some years now and have no problem getting what ever I shoot in focus and sharp.

There are two versions of the Opteka 10 diopter auxilary lens:
[1] a single lens element filter type
[2] a 4 lens element apochromatic version

++++

As you would expect - the former is poor for image quality and hard to get a flat field of focus with; but the second is a far more serious design and there are some photographers on the www posting excellent high magnification images using it. In design this latter version is far closer to the Rayonox and Nikon models - and for $25.00 USD new may be a worthwhile introduction to high magnification macro. Please share your experience !

If you are just starting with close up photography, the +3 or +4 diopter screw in fiters offer a great and inexpensive first step and make a real difference to what you can photograph compared with your conventional "kit lens" or 50mm prime as quality can be good when stopped down to F8 and the cost is less than a pizza; however - beyond that macro photography gets more technically challenging and a lot more expensive.

I use the wonderful but now very expensive Komine/Vivitar 55mm macro F2.8, but never leave home without a +4 diopter filter in my camera bag to fit my "kit zoom" as a "just in case"....

Too Little, Too Late - Sorry

I wish I spent more time on this site so I could have answered this promptly.

Did you buy the Opteka?

I did! Before you posted the question. I posted about it at the time, but possibly in the wrong place.

Opteka 10X Macro Lens Attachment - PentaxForums.com

Anyway, For the above post, I got some good but odd results, better than I expected. Part of that was the lens I attached it to (an old mf Takumar 135/2.5). I’ve tried it on my FA 50/1.7 and got some really good shots. I’m sure a more critical eye might say that other lenses would be better, but those are in a different price ballpark.

If you bought it, I’d be very curious as to how you feel about the results.

Just FYI, this thread is more than 6 years old (January of 2017), so the discussion is quite dated. Your post about it dates from 2019. There may or may not be any current interest.

Just sayin'...

But if one wants to work with an achromatic screw-on lens, then best to find the Canon 240d close-up lens (exists in several diameters, usually 52mm is the best if adapted via a step-down adapter 52-49mm)

The Canon 240D is identical to the Canon 250D closeup lens but much cheaper and it has 2 Diopters, both are achromatic lenses.
The Canon 500D has 4 diopters and is an achromat as well!

The Canon 450 isn't an achromatic lens but just a standard closeup lens, nothing that special (and 48mm)
