Not satisfied with Sigma 17-50mm f.2.8 hsm

Hello! I have shot a lot with my Sigma and I'm not impressed... Sharpness it's OK but not outstanding! Contrast very poor in comparison with my Tamron 28-200mm and Pentax 55-300mm... Colors are washed up and I have to pp a lot to be satisfied. I have a bad sample? Pentax 16-45mm or 16-85mm would be better? Any thoughts?

Hello!
Have you tried to reduce exposure a little? My own Sigma 17-50 is over exposing a bit and that gives those washed out colors.
I like my copy a lot, so give it a try.

It's a solution but won't give those contrasty and colorful pentax like images...

I think you might have a poor copy. My 17-50 is one of my very best lenses. The reviews on this forum have an average sharpness rating that is about as high as I've seen. It's the best APS-C lens that I have, and it was vastly superior to my 55-300, which I no longer own.

If you don't mind the variable aperture, the 16-85mm could be a nice replacement.

That said, look at this chart from lensrentals.com :

This is showing 8 copies of a 70-200m f/2.8 lens. This is sharpness test -- blue sharper, red softer.

There are no 2 identical copies. This is the variation we deal with with our lenses (esp zooms).

So you might very well have a poor copy.

I have no complaints about contrast and colors. These aspects are just as pleasing to me as is the sharpness. Like I said, it's probably my best APS-C lens.

I think I'll stick with my early Pentax 16-50.

Well, 16-50 2.8 it's a solution, because prices dropped a lot for a used copy...

I've got a 16-45 and it's very, very good but my Sigma 17-50 is in a different league again. I think you must have a poor copy.

I sold my Sigma 17-80 in favour of the DA*16-50. I have never regretted it for a moment - even when the SDM died.

I've had to correct the focus to -8 and now the sharpness is good, but colors and contrast, same story...

I've just taken those two photos to compare my Pentax HD DA 18-50mm WR to my Sigma 17-50mm.
I see no lack of contrast in the Sigma, bur I see a lot lack of sharpness in the Pentax.
The last one is the Sigma.

What are Tamron 17-50's running in your neck of the woods?
