K3 DNG files

Unable to open DNG files recently purchased K-3 using CS3 or Gimp 2.8. I can read them in the camera and Jpegs open fine. Any suggestion?

FastStone: if you have Windows.

It is a nice program. I've used it for years. And you're welcome for the help.

Gimp doesn't read raw files. You'd need something like ufraw or better yet Rawtherapee. CS3 ACR maybe using DNG 1.0 or 1.1. Pentax DNG is V1.2 I believe. Current spec is v1.4. from October 2012. Any raw convertor/reader using the newer standard can read older versions. The opposite is not true.
If you still want to use DNG and CS3 as your editor then I recommend buying Lightroom as it will provide you with the conversion like ACR but work with CS.
If you want to still use Gimp then I recommend you download a current copy of Rawtherapee. My comparison findings against commercial products with the K3 are that it can more than hold its own. And I do find it better than ACR for the K3. Much better demosaicing with the AMAZE option than ACR.

You can still use Photoshop CS3.

Just get Adobe DNG Converter (Adobe Digital Negative Converter 9.x).

Use it to convert your DNG (or PEF) files to DNG’s that are compatible with the camera raw format used by Photoshop CS3 (version 4.1).

The instructions to do it are in the webpage.

Note: one can use this procedure to be able to use from Photoshop CS / Lightroom 1.0 (or above) to edit any raw file that Adobe DNG Conveter can convert.

Best regards,

I have CS3 on a Mac and can read the K-3 II raw files fine. But I also have Adobe DNG Converter installed; maybe that enables additional raw formats for reading by CS3?

Leekil Its’ that!

I just tested with a dng from my K-S2.
It’s a newer camera than the K3 so it should create at least the same version as the ones created by it.

Tested in a windows 10 machine with Photoshop CS3 and it did not recognize the file. Installed the newer version of adobe dng converter, tested again and immediately the dng was recognized and opened it in adobe camera raw.

Best regards,

Thanks all, sounds like the DNG converter is what's needed for CS3. For what I do FastStone is a nice bit of software.

It's a pretty powerful piece of software, it even does layers if needed, batch files, plus editing, and best of all it's free!

I can open K-3 DNG files on my ancient laptop that still has Photoshop 7 (pre CS) on it. This is the beauty of DNG files.
Are you sure your camera is set to DNG not PEF?

Thanks for your input. When my laptop crashed I lost Photoshop 12 which I think would have opened my K3 DNG files. My desktop only CS3 as I mentioned I really like FastStone as suggested by photo lady.

Do you have the disk for Photoshop Elements 12? If so, you can install that on your desktop.
Adobe allows you to install Elements on two computers at the same time, as long as the user/s aren't using the program at the same time.
