I would opt for a DA35/2.4 over the 50/1.8. Also, the Sigma 17-50/2.8 is optically excellent in all the useful focal lengths for a reasonable price.

I was at the local Best Buy, getting a test with the canon and nikon lens, just to figure out what I would need Pentaxwise..A couple of comments are in order..
I was amazed about the D7200 viewfinder, it is huge, almost FF.But it was dim like hell.I guess its the OLED overlay..and AF is SLOW, my KR beats it full time. Then the Canon 80D..that is a button layout failure, although AF is very fast and quiet. Both have loud shutters, the K5iis is a lot more quiet than these guys..
Both cameras are hard to control using the dials and buttons, but the 80D, you would have to own ET's fingers just to press the ISO button.
Oh I forgot..the Sony A6500..really choppy EVF, last shot takes forever to clear on it..And too grayish! those AF points looking like ants didnt impress me either..all that cartoonish show only to focus well at the sides..

For zooms I'd say go with either Sigma's 18-35mm f1.8, Sigma's or Tamron's 17-50mm f2.8 lens, or Tamron's 28-75mm f2.8. For exception of the 18-35mm lens, the other 3 lenses are currently under $300 each on

If you don't want to buy/rent something before you go, I would suggest the 18-55 because of the wide angle. Cosplay opportunities want wide angle...

If you do want to get something new, the only things I don't like about my 16-50 are the size and the fact it won't cover the K1 sensor. I bought mine new in 2011, after the focus problems were supposedly fixed, and it's been trouble-free.

Still wondering. This makes a huge difference in what the minimum speed needed is.

Btw. A Sigma 24-70 f2.8 is in the marketplace close to $300.

Unless you're planning to be a Comicon pro, I'd think a 35 2.4 might be the only lens I'd buy as a one event lens capable of functioning in that environment. I'm just thinking, widest possible, widest aperture, best price.

Also apparently the Tamron 17-50 is available at a great price right now. It's a little slower than the 35 but of the lenses I own, it's probably what I'd take.

Other than the kit 18-55, which I dont want use, probably too slow,
what single lens would you recommend? I have seen the convention center lighting before, its not good
Jeff - I know this is old but I'm curious what you decided to do and how it turned out.
