Is this normal for a K1 battery grip?

When I hold the camera up against my computer monitor, I see light. The pins are all in & the camera works. And it is very very tightly screwed in. Is this normal? Thanks.

I've got some air space, about the same, with my grip on the K-1 also. This looks to be normal.

Maybe others can chime in for some additional feedback.

No worries if...

Even thus I do not own a K1 (just k5-ii with d-bg4), there is no need to worry if all contacts (electronics) are surrounded by seals, to make it "weather resistant".

Check the design of your BG to figure it out (to match the bottom of K1 pattern).

Same on my K10 and K20 (had to check, though - never really occurred to me !)

Same with K5 and K3 with the grip(s) ... although a bit tighter.
Always function as they should.

Same here. Some slight space showing.

Just seems like a lot of water can get in there. Not to mention corrode the screw. Still on the fence as to whether I should return it. Was hoping Adam would reply but the poor guy probably needs to take time off, sometime... :-p

The electronics have separate seals, so not much problem.
At the very least, perhaps the gap allows for air flow to help things dry more easily.

I think the design principle behind that gap is intentional: if water accumulates there you can blow that water out if needed. The metal used for those screws does posses a fair degree of corrosion resistance. Having said that: Resist the temptation to over-tighten that screw as you can cause damage to the grip and the camera at the attachment point, and possibly damage the weather seals and cause exactly the kind of issues with internal water accumulation that you are so worried about.

Really? you're going to return a camera grip because there is a gap at the attachment point? I use a grip on one of my K-1 bodies and haven't had a single issue with it, the functional and ergonomic improvements a grip brings to the camera vastly outweigh any possible issues that could arise from such a small gap. Bear in mind the battery grips for the Canon 7D, 5D, 6D cameras and Nikon D90 and D750 series camera grips all have exactly the same attachment mechanism and have visible gaps between the grip and camera body. The only DSLR cameras that do not have any gaps at all are cameras with built in vertical grips like the Nikon D1~D5 and Canon 1D series. Pentax has never been in the habit of making cameras like those because they are inherently bulky, Pentax likes to keep their camera designs on the svelte side. Though it is nice that Pentax gives us the option for a vertical grip, they recognize that there are some who don't mind a bit of extra heft to their gear.

Mine shows light between the grip and the body and through the screw knob slot. Functionally, everything works OK and the grip is firmly attached to the body.

mine has the gap , it is by design. Points of contact from battery grip to camera body are at the four corners , not in the center.

Normal, and same on my K-5 grip. And, yes, if you use it in the rain, water does get in that gap.
