That would be fine, yes, or even a spray based silicon lube would be fine, like a bike chain lube.
To answer the other part of your question, to keep threaded things in place without making it permanent, a small dab of Loctite 243 on each will solve it. Great stuff it is.

Re the original post, this is the head that came with my Manfrotto pod, and is perfect for the job. Nice tilt that locks solid if needed, even with my 150-450 on board. It will allow you to use the camera in both orientations too.
