pentax Q10 hotshoe flash not firing

So I just got a Q10, everything is working brilliantly except hotshoe flahses. I first stuck an Olympus fl-36 (which works on my K-01) but it didn't work. Then I tried my pentax af500ftz and that still doesn't work. Is there a setting I need to tweek in order to get it to fire? I swear back when I had a Q7 it worked with external flashes. Also I have the latest firmware update. Any help appreciated

Update. I also tried the af360fgz and no avail

I think you need to disable the built-in flash.

I've tried pushing the flash button and setting it to off. This did not work. I also tried having it set to flash on (flash auto is default)

No, a menu option specifically to turn off built-in flash -- it uses one or the other (built-in or hotshoe), so to enable hotshoe you disable internal. (Not just the back button to control flash options.)

On folder C2 #10 in the menu it has "flash when retracted" and I have that set to "do not discharge flash" (tired the other as well). Is there another part in the menu for flash? I'll keep looking

I think so. Can't find my Q(!) at the moment. (I moved recently, it is in a case somewhere.)

Interestingly it has now started working with the Olympus flash but still not the Pentax flash. It just doesn't make sense. But at least this was the flash I was wanting to use on it since its small

If you find anything more out let me know. I appreciate your help. I'll update here if the pentax flashes work

Shutter speed has to be low enough also I suppose...

Ok, found my Qs. I guess it was the regular flash button on the back I was thinking of. Flash needs to be set to OFF (which sounds weird to enable another kind of flash). But I guess you did that? If the Olympus flash works, then the hotshoe must be enabled and your Pentax isn't firing for some other reason.

You need to use flash off, which disabled the built in flash and enables the hotshoe

Yes, there are several possible reasons, but you can eliminate hotshoe being disabled if it works with other flashes. Probably has something to do with the fact that any non-Pentax flash is acting in "dumb" mode with hotshoe being a simple trigger while a Pentax flash is trying to communicate with the camera. I tend to use the hotshoe only to activate Cactus radio triggers, so I don't know the ins-and-outs of Pentax flash modes, etc...
