The shutter has worn out.

The extra thin parts needed to make these super compact 35mm SLRs meant their lifespan was a bit shorter.

Still, it's 30+ years old. How long was it supposed to last?

Welcome to the Pentax Forums!

Something is definitely not right with the leading curtain. it should catch on a retainer at the top of its travel. Shutter problems with that class of camera are usually resolved by replacement of the shutter or full mirror box assembly. The shutter itself is not really serviceable. Conventional wisdom is that it is probably cheaper and easier to simply find a different body rather than have a repair done using donor parts.
