K-1 Pentax DA 300mm problem

I have a K-1 and K-3. My Pentax DA 300mm stopped autofocusing properly on the K-1 but works on the K-3. My other lenses work properly on the K-1. It will autofocus from about 75 feet to infinity but no closer. Suggestions?

I don't know that lens, but it doesn't have a focus limiter does it?

Clean contacts on camera/lens, check for focus fine adjustment - maybe your 300 mm even uses an adjustment that is way off in customs settings.
Does the lens work/get closer in live view, manual focus?

Hve you tried it multiple times, with a fresh battery in the K-1?

It was working fine and just stopped. Cleaned contacts on lens and camera. I have a battery grip and both were/are fully charged.

The DA*300 was from an era that used a motor that could be problematic. The DA*16-50 was known to suffer most and used the same design. My DA* 300 has never been a problem but a tip is when mounting the lens on the camera, manually focus to infinity then Af on something close, then, manually focus at minimum and AF on something near infinity. now AF between the two extremes a few times. It seems to wake-up the motor and you should be fine for your session.

Has the lens been sitting around a long time without being used? I have similar issue with 2 SDM lenses, DA 17-70 and DA*200 on my K-3. Initially they seem not to work but after a few shots using quick shift, the SDM starts working. Is this what you may be observing on your K-1? I suspect the issue may be in the lens, not the camera unless other SDM lenses also do not work on the K-1. This issue seems to be isolated to SDM. I have not observed this with screwdrive, DC and PLM lenses.
