Pentax K3 & Digital Filters

Hello, I have a very specific question about the Digital Filters on the Pentax K3, but I am unsure how I'll put it into words so here goes.

I've experimented with some of the digital filters on my camera and am very pleased with the results. However, once I take the DNGs into photoshop I find that the filter isn't applied despite the thumbnail in Windows clearly show the filter. Is there some step I need to do in camera to sorta rasterize (for the lack of a better term) the filter to the raw or am I stuck editing the original JPG?

I hope someone can help, Thanks to all whom try!

Either shoot raw+ and use the resulting JPEG, or apply the filter to a developed file using the Pentax Digital Camera Utility software that came with your camera.

A third option would be to use another program's filter suite, as there are lots out there (enter LR, Topaz, etc).

Digital filters are only applied to JPG files, not to RAW files.

What you are seeing if you look at the RAW file on your camera is the embedded JPG preview which has the filter applied to it. The details of the filter that you applied are contained in the RAW file and as Adam says when you develop the RAW file in Pentax Digital Camera Utility you can then apply that filter to the RAW file as you develop it. I don't think any other software recognises these Pentax camera filters.

Once you have applied the digital filter in Pentax Digital Camera Utility you can then further modify the file.

RAW files are meant to be just that. The RAW data off the sensor with minimal tweaking from the camera. That way if you applied a B&W filter then when you came to process the file you decided to make a colour version the full colour information is still available in the RAW file.

When the filters are applied to a JPG file they are "baked in" and cannot be in done. So if you used the B&W filter on a JPG file there is NO WAY you could go back to a colour version.

Regards

Chris

I'm experimenting with Digital Camera Utility 5, I managed to tinker with the parameters to find the 1:1 appearance to my preview JPG from my camera. But I'm finding the software is not that optimised and might be to slow for my purpose, especially since I'm trying to emulate a specific look and have to consider my raws as being originally B&W.

I'll keep playing with it, unfortunately my workflow in editing negates using Topaz as I'll likely blow through the trail period.

Thanks all!
