What lens size would one recommend for a car show with my K-X

Hi there fellow Pentaxers.

I want to know what would be the best lens of a car show. I usually use the stock lens and I know it is not to my liking. it is fine for outside but not for this... give me your feed back please..

Something *really* wide. 18mm often isn't wide enough on a crop body.
Fisheye lenses love cars. The DA10-17 is a nice option as it is relatively rectilinear at the "long" end, but still quite wide.
Ultra wide zooms like the Sigma 8-16 or 10-20 are excellent. Or the DA12-24.

What's your budget?

Ideally, you'd have several, Dvitale.

An UWA (10-18mm here on full frame) will make a car impressive, a macro lens (50mm here) will get detail shots ...

something wide and something with close-focusing abilities..

for me it would be my DA10-17 zoom and my Sigma 28mm....

You already received some nice comment. You may need to consider if you will be indoor or outdoor. Also how much space will you have. Indoor shows are likely to be more confined.

I would say that my own selection for a car show would include:
(a) the DA10-17mm and DA15mm Ltd, the FA31mm Ltd if I am not limited in number of lenses; or
(2) the DA15mm Ltd if I have to take only one lens.

The DA15mm and DA10-17mm may appear to overlap, but they are very different lenses IMHO. The DA15mm Ltd is a Wide angle (WA) lens, with outstanding IQ. Great lens outdoor and indoor. The DA10-17mm brings the flexibility of a Fisheye lens at 10mm and a Wide angle at 17mm, plus a range of intermediate focal lenses. But I prefer the rendering of the DA15mm over the DA10-17mm at 15 mm.

Hope that the comment may help.

I used to shoot cars mostly with the 15mm, which adds a fair amount of perspective to the shot.

Then I started using the 21 a bit more often.

Now, on FF I use a 28...

and 50.

I could use a 17T&S, but it's a bit of an extra load, and is a bit wide on FF.

A long lens (200) has a place.

I would recommend the 12-24. Wider than a 15, longer than a 21. It has excellent IQ.

Note as your FL increases, so does the amount of people between you and the car.

I would recommend the 20-40mm f2.8 if it is within your budget
paired up with a WR camera, you will be able to get shots most other people wont be able to? (Not sure if its visible but it was pouring with the photo of the Toyota AE86)

Currently I'm shooting with the sigma 35mm f1.4 which I am very happy with

I will be a contrarian. I shot an outdoor vintage car show last year mostly with the DFA* 70-200, with the DFA 28-105 as a secondary lens, all on the K-1.

DFA 70-200 @ 108mm

DFA 70-200 @ 100mm

DFA 70-200 @ 70mm

DFA 70-200 @ 70mm

70mm

130mm

83mm

Just saying. Detail can be fun too.

My budget is slim but it give me something to look for used. I have been lucky I have at least 6 lenses with the items I have picked up. Even one guy gave me all his old stuff and it was amazing... I have a 28, 2 50's and other zooms, doubles, and some other items... All are what I call semi autos but the 28 isn't and hard as hell to get used to.

The lens somewhat depends on whether you are inside or out, how much space you have. If it is an indoor show A tripod will be your best friend. And I notice people will give you space with a tripod, and you can also get nice angles like very low. A tripod is good outside too.. The 15 Ltd and Tamron 10-24 have been most useful to me, but I agree with Paul, a longer lens for detail is a nice tool to have.

HD DA 15

Tamron 10-24

DA 18-135 WR, My only choice on a rainy day car show.

Thanks for the shot of the Trueno (AE-86). I watched "Initial D" but never saw a real one. Also, I swear that they misspelled the writing on the grill in some of the cart00ns.

When I was using a crop body, my lenses of choice for this were the 15mm LTD and the 21 LTD.

For a long time I used a Sigma 10-20 until I could find a Sigma 8-16 which is now my walk around car show lens.
You can always get closer to the subject, you can't always get further away without some helpful soul walking/driving into shot.
Not cheap options I'll grant you but anything good that's wider than 18mm will likely not be cheap.

Options not yet mentioned, all primes, the Samyang 10mm, 14mm, and 16mm primes. All fast, have been around for a few years at least so used copies are out there, and all offer a wide aperture for low-light and depth of field control. All are manual focus, so be aware.

I personally have a DA15 that's great for this kind of thing. Every once in a while I wish it was wider. The Pentax 12-24 or Sigma 8-16 would probably interest me most if I didn't already own the DA15.
