I would be very surprised if there wasn't a M42 to SONY adaptor somewhere....

Is it just me or is the lens in the photo missing its mount?

Looks that way to me, too. The mount is removable to install filters, isn't it?

The mount is also interchangable from m42 to K - these lenses occasionally are separated from this part which is virtually impossible to find. Someone will have to make a part to replace it. 3D printing might work since the lens isn't going to be held up by the camera body with that massive thing! Alternately someone can machine one or cobble one from other available parts. If I were the owner I'd skip the k adapter and make a direct to Sony adapter at this point.

The lens is missing the mount tube, which would have been either m42 or K-mount depending on when the lens was made. Mount tubes alone are no longer available as new stock and finding one as NOS would be as improbable as winning the lottery.

I will advise not to spend a ton on the project as my own experience with this model lens is that it isn't tack sharp and is frustrating to use. Most modern telephoto cropped are better and teleconverters make much lighter lenses functionally equivalent (albeit slower) with the high iso options available to us.

Seems like this came in screw mount and k-mount. It does use rear filters. OP says the interchangeable mount part is missing.

Here is the screw-mount version. You can see the missing rear piece which is also shown in the technical drawing above.

from this webpage: S-M-C Takumar - www.pentax-slr.com

The review database and one for sale on ebay show a K-mount on them, doesn't look like a m42 to k-mount adapter. Auctions mention that it came in M42 and (more rare) K-mount.

The one I had was m42 with a k mount adapter permanently affixed but I've seen k mounts that were native like the one shown on eBay. It is a fairly simple tube no mechanical linkage to aperture or anything else. It should be possible to make.

? The problem is that this lens come with a tube that terminates in an m42 or k mount that fits this specific lens.

If ‘Takumar’ is on the beauty ring the lens was issued with an m42 mount tube between 1966 and 1975. The optics were upgraded to ‘Super-Multi-Coated’ and the engraved name changed to that nomenclature during production.

In 1975 the engraved name was changed to ‘SMC Pentax’ and the lens was supplied with a K-mount Mount Tube. The engraved name was again altered in 1977 to align with the M (followed by A) lenses naming convention.

I believe production continued in small quantities into the mid to late 80’s but the production end date was removed from K-mount Page. My notes for my lens say I believed at the time I added it to the Serial Number Database that it was made in 1989. It has the 2nd highest Serial here.

Here's one with the M42 mount:

Interesting as it has a simple notched "gunsight" on it.
