K1000 meter does not work at 1/1000 (only)

Hi all, the title says it all-

Newly aquired K1000 which works great. Except, the meter goes over the top/ all the way up at 1/1000, regardless of aperture or light conditions.

All other shutter speeds meter just fine. Anyone have experience or advice on this? Thanks!

The meter works depending on the combination of ASA setting and shutter speed. The K1000 manual shows the ranges - and you can find it for download on the Web.

Yes, the combination of shutter speed and ISO indicate an EV that is outside the meter's range at the mounted lens' maximum aperture. Current model Pentax cameras have similar limitations.

Thank, I reviewed the chart. The aperture and shutter settings fall well within those ranges shown. However, the page mentions that is for Asa 100. I'm using Asa 50- I don't see a chart in the manual that shows an adjustment for different film speeds (looking at page 24). But I assume that is the issue...

The explanation in the manual is not as complete as it should be, though the last sentence on page 24 does indicate that the range changes with ASA (ISO). A better explanation will be found in the specifications. There the meter sensitivity range is given as 3-18 EV with ASA 100 film.

Exposure Value (EV) is simply a combination of shutter speed and aperture with EV 0 being f/1.0 at 1 second with each integer step representing a full exposure stop. EV is often used as an estimate of scene illuminance with a convention of ASA/ISO 100. Shifting the EV scale for ASA/ISO 50 with the same f/2 lens as the table on page 24 provides EV 3 at 1s wide open. 18 EV is reached at f/11 for 1/1000s and ISO 50. FWIW, 18 EV at ISO 50 is the same as clean snow in full sun, so you probably don't need to worry about meter range at the high end for most shooting.

EDIT!!!

I just re-read your posts and realized that I (we?) was not reading your post correctly. Is there any chance the battery is inserted upside down? The positive (+) side should be facing out when inserted into the battery chamber.

No, the issue is just as you outlined- I moved the iso dial to 100 for a sec just to see, and it did meter for all shutter speeds. Thanks again!
