FA 31mm f/1.8 limited step-down ring

Quick question I just ordered the famous FA31mm, I have 62mm ND filters, the 31 says it's 58mm, with the built in hood will a 58mm to 62mm adapter ring work on this lens.

Not immediately and it depends whether you are using it on a Full Frame camera (Pentax K-1) as opposed to Pentax's APS-C cameras. On APS-C the usual technique is to "de-glass" some 58mm filters so they reach past the end of the built in hood and then put on a 58 to 62mm step up ring.

HOWEVER, if you are using this on a Full frame camera this will not work as the extra length of these filters will cause Vignetting. Your best to use a 58mm HD filter or too go for a much bigger ND filter and an external adapter.

Regards

Chris

The best option is to buy a 58mm filter. Such an expensive and wonderful lens deserves the correct accessories.

Any workaround to make a bigger filter fit will be clunky, will probably cost more, and most likely cause vignetting on the K-1.

No. You cannot add a 58 to 62 adapter ring to the 31mm with the built-in hood. Now, if you added a stack of 58 to 58 adapter rings (or got a really thick adapter ring) to extend beyond the built in hood, then yes, it would be possible to add the 58 to 62 adapter ring on a APS-C sensor. But as SeventhDR mentioned if you're using a full frame sensor, vignetting will be an issue. I concur with the others, just get a 58mm filter.

better than stepping filter rings: Heliopan metal hoods. Here the short version. you can stack them too. There is also a long version. I use it as hood on the FA31.
For example: Heliopan Kurz-Sonnenblende Alu schwarz 58mm | Sonnenblenden | Objektiv-Zubehör | Objektive & Filter | Brenner Foto Versand
