K100D lens compatibility question

Hi all, I'm new to this site and was just wondering if anyone can help me. I have a Pentax K100D with a 18-50mm lens. Someone is selling a Pentax camera with an extra lens a 100-300mm lens. Would this lens be compatible and any good with my camera. I'm still learning how to use my camera.

Almost all auto-focus k-mount lens except the new PLM lens(es) should be compatible. Almost all manual focus K-mount lenses should be compatible with limitations on shooting and metering modes too.

Which 100-300mm lens? Make? Model? If it's a k-mount lens it will work with a few very specific exceptions.

As for whether it's any good, again, make/model? You may have luck finding the lens here, possibly with user reviews.

this is another chart you might find interesting:

Pentax K-Mount Lens Series Explained: The differences between various Pentax lens series

In a nutshell

There are several series of Pentax K-mount lenses; the ones currently being produced include the DA (digital), DA L (cheap digital kit), D FA (full-frame, digital optimized), and FA (full-frame) series. While all Pentax K-mount lenses ever produced are compatible with all current Pentax DSLRs (in some cases with restrictions in that not all exposure modes of the camera are supported by old lenses), there are significant differences between each lens series and each has different features. Furthermore some of the newer lenses do not work with older cameras. We'll be exploring the differences between the various K-mount series lenses in this article

The K100D can use virtually any k-mount lens, except the Pentax SDM-type lenses, or the new 55-300 PLM. The K100D Super can make use of SDM lenses, however.

DC, PLM or SDM: The lens has a built-in motor for autofocus (K10D, K100D and newer cameras can take advantage of this).

My bad, I confuse PLM with KAF4.

The K100D is only a crippled KAF mount and lacks the power zoom contacts. Manual Focus only with DC, PLM or SDM.

The K100D Super is crippled KAF2 with the power zoom contacts.

Additionally KAF4 lenses will only shoot wide open as there is no way for the camera to control the iris. No firmware update for KAF4 support.

Refer to the above link compatibility chart and http://kmp.pentaxians.eu/technology/k-mount/crippled_af/

Thank you so much.A guy is selling his Pentax camera with the extra lens 100-300mm for $275. I asked him if he would sell the lens on its own and he asked what would I pay. Do you have a clue how much a second hand lens that size would be worth.

I asked him but he hasn't replied back. He was selling a Pentax camera with the extra lens 100-300mm for $275. I asked how much for the lens on its own and he asked what I'd pay for it. I asked type of Pentax camera he had and what name the lens was but he hasn't answered back yet.

Without further details, I'd say that price is very high. The 100-300, assuming it is a F or FA series Pentax lens, typically would sell for $30-$100.
If you're just after the lens, you could certainly find it for less than $275. I honestly would not pay more than $10-$20 for the vague information
you seem to have. What model of camera? What make and model of lens? What kind of condition? Have you seen photographs?
Why is the offer appealing when that lens can be readily found elsewhere for considerably less than $275. Have you searched for
comparisons?

The lens is a Sigma 100-300mm. Will this work with my K100D.

It will work on your K100D, I have one and seldom use it having found others that I prefer. It cost me about $25 I think.
If you are set on a zoom lens to 300mm the Pentax DA L 55-300mm can be found and is a better bet (assuming it is not damaged or has fungus) but lacks the quickshift ability that the DA (not L) has. You should be able to find a DA L for under $100.
Other budget to 300mm lenses such as the Sigma 70-300mm and the Tamron 70-300mm, both of which have a pseudo macro function can be found even cheaper. I believe I have seen the Tamron advertised brand new at $99.

It will certainly work on the K100D.

However, "Sigma 100-300mm" is still ambiguous information. I know of the following 100-300mm lenses that Sigma produced:
  • Sigma 100-300 1:4 APO EX
  • Sigma 100-300mm 1:4 APO DG EX
  • Sigma APO DG 100-300mm 1:4 EX (2 versions)
  • Sigma Zoom 100-300mm 1:4.5-6.7 DL (3 generations, each in silver or black, the third genereation with chrome or black bayonet)
  • Sigma Zoom 100-300mm 1:4.5-6.7 UC (3 versions, 2 of them in silver)
While the 100-300 1:4 versions are better built and faster and therefore rather to be found in the 3-digit price range, I would not pay more than 50 US $ for the DL or UC versions.

BTW a 1:2 macro isn't " pseudo macro ", it just isn't a 1:1 macro
