Camera and lens hit the floor....what to check for with the camera

Apparently, the strap of my camera was too close to the edge of the table, and the new puppy walked by and decided to give a little tug on it.
Heard the crash noise, of something hitting the floor. I wandered into the kitchen, and my wife had picked up my K-5 and set it on the table, and my daughter offered up that
the puppy pulled the camera off the table onto the floor.

It landed lens first . Now my K105 has a bit of an issue.

The body of the camera looks like it didn't get a scratch from that fall, but I was curious if there is something I should be looking for (other than the obvious cracks, scratches...), or some sort of "pre-flight" check to look for on the camera.

I did take the above pictures with the dropped K-5, and the SMC-K 30mm which I had recently swapped off the camera for the 105.

I also removed the strap. I don't really use it with the wrist strap on it as well.

Thanks

David

That really sucks, hopefully your camera is OK. If it seems to function fine, I wouldn't stress looking for damage. As for the lens...

Since the impact was on the lens, then transferred to the mount, that’s where I would start. Inspect the camera mount for any visible damage first. Then I would take a known good lens and check for it being out of plane. Do some test shots as though you were checking for decentered elements, paying close attention to the edges.

Outside of that, I’m glad your camera still works!

Seems ok with my manual lenses. I'll need to check something AF after bit.

I'll dig into the 105 this weekend when I have more time.

Thanks

Condolences!

A few things to check:

1. Check the mount and mount screws for looseness or gaps

2. Check that the light meter does not over-expose (it can get dislodged)

3. Check that autofocus functioning for change in back-focus/front-focus (it can get dislodged)

4. Check that focusing with the focusing screen seems to be accurate (damage to the mirror can shift the screen's focus)

Good luck!

if you do find loose screws' before you do anything you may want to look at this:

Thanks for the list.

AF checks out, as well as front \ back focus. Used the DFA 100.

Didn't find any loose screws, and the mount looks evenly spaced found the camera body.

time to find something wrong with the K-5 and replace it - just in case, say....

(:

(glad to hear everything seems to be OK except for the listing 105/2.8)

Your front ring & element appears to be pushed in. Is it focusing min <> infinity?

If it can't be pulled back to its original position it won't focus properly across the whole plane I wouldn't think.

I had something similar happen to my K-30 with Tamron 18-250mm attached. Everything worked and is still working today.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...

I had two such experiences. First, a running back friend of mine, running a sweep type play on a football field planted his outstretched hand and arm directly on the front of my lens and ran me over as he went out of bounds. Camera destroyed! Second, an unsecured camera skidded from the rear of a van across the floor and struck the driver side seat mounts. Kaput!

A few years ago I moved into a new neighborhood. Made some new friends. The usual sort of people except for one couple. They own and operate APT Camera. They fix stuff-cameras, flashes the occasional smart-Alek. Good folks, fair and reasonably honest as far as I know. Camera repairs are not usually inexpensive but they put an old film camera back together for me and the charge seemed reasonable. Happy to share their address.

The same thing happen to me last month with my 1 month old k-3 II, Almost had a heart attack, after checking everything, the air finally get into my lungs, I survived and the camera and FA J lens too, but next time I will be more careful about leaving the strap hanging, even on low tables, it's bad for your health.

Hope there are no consequences on your camera,

Regards

Those lens hoods can be pretty good shock absorbers - much better than filters which shatter and scratch the front element (yes, I know from experience ).
