K-50 under exposing.

I have a K-50 underexposing, I am quite sure the aperture actuator or system is malfunctioning...
I assume it has to be sent to Pentax/Ricoh, long wait etc. Financially speaking, is it worth fixing?

There is no way to answer that question until you do hear back from them, because we don't know what they will want to do and at what cost.

I've heard there are videos online on youtube showing how to fix it yourself... maybe worth a try?

There are a number of threads in the K-30/50 section

I have the K50. Had the aperture block failure. Sent to precision for repair. As I remember about $175. I'm happy.

You can try contacting RIcoh US. They have been willing in the past to cover this repair out of warranty. They will require you sending the camera into Precision for evaluation before making a decision.

It's absolutely worth fixing, either paying for it or DIY.
It's a great camera, and worth much more than the cost of the repair.

I had mine fixed at Johnston's photopia in the UK. They are the Pentax repairer. The resale value is probably similar to the cost of repair so you need to decide if you are happy with the K50 or plan on trading up. I wanted a K3 but they were out of my price range so I paid for the repair. Three weeks later I got a nearly new K3 for £275! I still use my K30 and know I can sell it on so don't regret paying, but I wish my timing had been better, especially as I use my K30 mainly for manual lenses which don't require the damn solenoid at all!

If you decide against fixing your K50, I might be interested in it as a second body to back up my K3. My son laid claim to my old K30 the moment it was fixed! He'll be taking it with him when he goes off to college in August.
