I would like to try a graduated neutral density filter with a polarizer and it would seem the best approach is a 100mm square/rectangular holder kit for 77mm lens thread. Dang they add up to some big dollars! The reviews of the cheaper ones on Amazon are pretty negative, so I thought I would ask to see what you’ve found and liked?

Try the Filter Dude. I use his 100mm lens holder as well as the Lee holder. Yes, the Lee is nicer but at $25 for the Filter Dudes, you can't go wrong. He sells quality hardware. He also sells the adapter rings. All my adapter rings are by Filter Dude. If you're shooting 24mm or wider on FF, get the wide angle adapter ring. Also, he has a great lens cap that goes over the adapter ring so you don't have to keep removing it every time you take the filter holder off. Get a few, they're cheap and well worth the cost. I paid abut $25 for a couple of the cheapest holder/filter/adapter sets that I could find and then spent about $50 on a couple of proper filters in colours which I use most often. I had to heat a couple of bits up and/or bend things a bit, but it works fine for my purposes (I don't use it frequently, and I'm kinda glad i didn't pay much for it).

Cheap plastic filters scratch really easily btw - you have to be really careful with them.
