Is my Pentax ist D broken beyond repair?

I have a second hand 'ist D' bought 6 months ago. I'm a complete beginner and am still on auto mode for everything. Sadly this weekend I think my camera has broken. I'm only getting bright white images, some of which have the tiniest bit of a shadowy pink image which is barely visible. If I view other images stored and taken prior to this weekend, they are all still perfectly visible. Any ideas what's broken? Is it a repairable problem or should I just start saving for a new camera? I have done a function reset incase i have inadvertently pressed something I shouldn't. Unfortunately this hasn't helped. Advice please.

What is the name of the lens mounted on the camera?

Check that you have not set a positive amount of exposure compensation to over expose a photo.

Have you got a copy of the manual. You can get one here - Operation Manuals Download : Support & Service | RICOH IMAGING - Check the Discontinued Model section at the bottom of the page.

Regards

Chris

You could try the following;
Switch from auto to AV or P and try some images, you have not stated what lens you are using but if you remove it, use a lens cloth to clean the contacts on both lens and camera (then dispose of the cloth, do not use it on you optics) and try again. Make sure you have not switched the camera from AF to manual.

agree..something with EXIF info would help. Lets make sure your ISO is not through the roof, or exposure comp. The D is cool camera...I had one many years ago.

Sunny Day outside; M mode; Set F stop to f/16, ISO to 100, and Shutter speed to 1/125 seconds

Does it still look weird?

As Asleyfox recommends, you can save a pdf of the manual on a computer. I would recommend resetting the camera to its factory original settings, just in case something is accidentally causing the problem.
The instructions for reset are on page 126.
Do you have a spare Compact Flash card to try?

A sample image with intact EXIF data would be very useful.

Might be color banding or noise in high ISO.
Low quality SD card used. Give name of card used.
