Pentax P50 - winding problem

Hello fellow Pentax lovers,

I've been getting into analog photography, and I've borrowed my fathers P50.
Even though I like how it works, it has some problems.
First, I find that the shutter button takes an incredible amount of force in order to take the picture. This, however, is erratic - sometimes it doesn't, but most of the times it does.
Also, when winding the film, in order to take another picture, it keeps telling me (the small arrow in the LCD keeps blinking) to wind 2-3 times before letting me take the picture. Which results in 28-29 pictures per roll, instead of 36.

When working with it unloaded (w/o any film), most of the times it works ok. I find it that when a film has been loaded, the extra force necessary to actually wind the film makes it worse.

Does anyone have any idea of what is happening?

Welcome to the forum!

The P5/50 has a special way of loading film, have you referenced the manual to double check that the film was loaded correctly?

Here is a link to the manual if you do not have one:

Hmm, what do you mean by special? It looks pretty straightforward.
I was about to load a dummy roll, but now the shutter isn't even firing.

It doesn't seem to me that this is a model worth putting any cost into. Film bodies these days mostly go for a song, even an upscale Pentax model, like the PZ-1p (or Z-1p). A high-quality slide film is still the standard for accuracy in portraying the exposure you actually get as opposed what you were trying for. The better you get in your metering technique, then both will become the same.

At the same time, an older model Pentax DSLR in very good to excellent condition does not cost much, and will pay for itself over time being that there's no cost for film or processing. In addition to that, you can see your results right away, and at no additional expense you can practice as much as you want or have time for. You can also better adjust your shooting parameters because you can change ISO sensitivity from one shot to another instead of changing a whole roll of film to one of a different ISO value.

I have exactly the same problem, LCD screen indicates the shutter is cocked, I need to put a bit more force to winder. Other wise I'll have blank frames (coz shutter won't fire). Unfortunately googling didn't help and at the service the nice guy told I should be happy it even works. Most likely the problem with some magnet that keeps the shutter working and if it's broken, there's no way to fix it. Magnet replacement could work but who really bother with it?.. Good that I payed only 5 EURO for the camera.
