Folder Numbering

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

I am new here.

I use aPentax K5-ii and have an issue with Pentax 'DATE' folder numbering (it seems to be a frequent topic), but mine, I think, is unusual.

On a trip to the USA-Canada I used several SD cards (approx. 25-32GB) and found the numbering system of the photo folders to be out of sync.

That is, folder 100_0606 has older photos (numerical and time wise) than folder 104_0606 (folders 101, 102, 103_0606 were missing?).

Example:
100_0106: 8434 - 8861
101_0106: 7376 - 8146
102_0106: 8147- 8843
---
100_0306: 9426 - 9479
102_0306: 9156 - 9425
---
100_0506: 0367 - 0621
104_0506: 0187 - 0366 etc

This 'out of sequence pattern' is consistent across all the SD cards used.

To resolve the issue I created separate RAW and JPEG folders (JPEG-01, 02,03,04 etc) onto a separate 3Tb HDD and copied the SD cards JPEG and RAW files from the individual SD cards to these directories and the photo numbers are back in date and numerical sequence.

Example
JPEG-01:7376 - 9999
JPEG-02:0001 - 1999
JPEG-03:3000 - 5000 etc

This put all the photos back into the correct numerical-date-time sequence.

I am going to try the 100PENTAX system to see if I get sequential folders and photo numbers.

Will the XXXPENTX folder format solve the time-number- date issue with the data folder system?

Date formaton the camera is set to - dd/mm/yy.

The frustrating part was working on photos in folder 100_0606 and then finding that photos in the following folder 104_0606 pre-dated, and preceeded numerically, the photos in the folder you were just working on?

I would appreciate any help and advice.

Kindregards, Keith

KIS(not necessarily S).

2017
2018
etc.

inside
01
02
...
12

inside
001_0101
etc.

Then organize with your favorite DAM's keywording and collection system.

My K10D only has one slot but I use the Date folder numbering option also.

When creating a new folder the camera will increment from the highest numbered folder on the card. If there is no folders on the card or the highest is 999 it will start over with 100.

To keep the folder numbers in sequence I always leave the last (highest numbered) folder with the last image on the card. Empty folders get deleted automatically. When a new folder is created it will stay in sequence.

When I swap cards the folders will start at 100. When this happens I copy them to my PC I will renumber the folders manually to keep them in sequence and go back to the card that will be in the camera and renumber the last folder on it to reflect the changes on the PC.

I don't know how numbering on dual slot cameras is handled. My guess would be it starts from whatever the highest number folder is on either card. Or it could always start at 100 when an "empty" card is inserted.

I believe you can use EXIFTool to move files to folders it can create by creation date (EXIF data). This would automate your sorting task. You could probably find the command/script to do this online rather than working it out yourself. I never take so many photos in one day that I can't deal with it by hand.

We’re these cards new? If they had been previously used, and deleted instead of being formatted before re-use, this can cause the numbering of the folders to be out of sequence. Deleting the card is more or less telling the camera to over-write what’s on the card, which leaves remnants of previous folders on the card.

Welcome to the Pentax Forums!

Were these folders all on the same card? If not, that might explain 100_0106 having newer files.
