K-5 iis PASM mode dial stuck locked on video green and P

As described, I can't access any other modes. I have tried extra pressure on the lock button, and twisting as hard as I dare. Replaced battery, too.

I have searched this forum repeatedly and found only one similar fail: mode dial skipped settings. But no positive fixes for that.

I hate to retire a camera for a minor mechanical fail, but what option is there?

Did any dirt or water get under the dial? Sounds like issues with the contacts, I guess?

This may be simplistic but have you tried pressing with a hard object like the tip of a screwdriver while rocking the dial back and forth?

Just to be clear, are you saying that the mode dial will rotate to "Movie" "Green" and "P" positions only and that the lock button is still required to move between those modes?

To me, it sounds like the lock button went partially defective. You might need that replaced. A service center could disassemble that part to find out, unless you are a vey handy tinkerer yourself. It doesn't sound like it should be an expensive fix, but these days....

Exactly right

Any clues regarding non-invasive removal of the lock button or the mode dial? I am reluctant to start levering and pulling to find the access points.

Generally you have to take off the bottom plate and back to get the top off, based on disassembly for other models. The mode dial itself is probably attached to the top plate and the plate is attached to the camera as one piece. Then you have to fix the problem with all the crap hanging off the camera by delicate important wires. Any instructions for the K-7 or other K-5 models should be exactly the same.

That sounds more invasive than I career to do at this point.

The button goes down as I switch P to Green to_Video, but the dial locks before the video detent.

It is on the bottom of the mode dial

Great question! I rarely change meter mode, and now find that dial also locked in place...Almost as if it was GLUED in place.
I may invert the camera and apply a few drops of universal solvent hydrogen hydroxide...

Progress! I think I must have gotten some sticky liquid on it—like coffee with cream. Standby...
hmm, it does smell like coffee!

More water on the inverted camera...
