Is the flash Metz Af-1 compatible with the K-70 ?

Hi guys,

Recently my old K20D is having the ''No card in the camera'' issue, blowing in it is not helping and nothing seems stuck in it, so I decided it might be time to change camera and I though of the k-70, but I can't find anywhere online if it's going to be compatible with my Metz 58 Af-1 ? Or do i need to get a new flash also ? Thanks for the help!

If it worked with the K20D, it will work with the K-70 AFAIK.

If a "Metz AF-1" exists, I have not seen one (I may be wrong).
To get a reliable answer from one of our members, you should specify about which Metz AF-1 you are speaking.

I own the Metz 24 AF-1 and the Metz 48 AF-1, and both are fully compatible with my *istDS, K200D, and K-5.
But in some cases there were years between the introduction of different Metz AF-1 models.
As Pentax seems to have modified the flash protocol several times (which obviously affects 3rd party flashes only), you cannot assume that, if one AF-1 model works, all the others will be ok, too.

My apology, forgot to add it's the ''Metz 58 Af-1'' that I currently have.

The only problem that arises with Metz Pentax-dedicated compatibility is trying to use one designed for APS-C on a K1 when the latter is in full-frame mode.

So theres a big chance that the Metz 58 Af-1 will not be compatible with the K-70, cause I know they did an update for it to work with the K-1, which came out the same year as the k-70 ?

Metz flashes work fine with the K-1 if the firmware (Metz firmware) has been updated.

I have the 58 AF-1. It works fine with my K-3 and K-S2, so it should certainly work with the K-70. Just make sure you install the latest firmware.

As for the new camera, I'd suggest you also look at the KP, if the price is similar to the K-70. (There's only $A100 between them here at present.) The KP is a more advanced camera.

The KP is much closer to a K20D than would a K-70, in terms of build quality and controls, being that the K20D was a flagship model. I still have my K20D, now seldom used, as well as my often-used KP. While the KP is not quite a flagship model in every respect of features and controls, it is in line quality-wise. The K20D is a very meaty camera in size and feel. The KP is of even higher quality as to its VF, magnesium alloy construction, and advanced features, but in a very svelte slimmer design, which is expandable via various grips, including the optional battery grip.

There might be an easy fix for the K20D. I once had a memory card problem in my K10D. The camera just wouldn't read any card. It turned out to be that a tiny piece of plastic was lodged in the slot, preventing the card from going all the way in. I managed to shake the piece of plastic out and the camera was back in business. By the looks of it, it was a piece of a write protect switch. What a stupid that was!
