Should I have got a Pentax FA 28-105mm f3.5-5.6 ED DC WR Lens for my k-70?

Just bought and still not arrived a k-70 with 18mm-135mm kit lens.

Just noticed I can buy k-70 body only and Pentax FA 28-105mm f3.5-5.6 ED DC WR lens together for only an extra £100 more. reading reviews its a better lens and will also fit on a full frame if I ever upgrade later on.

Should I stick to my 18-135mm kit lens or ring the company and change order.

Thanks all and sorry for all the questions.

From what I've read that's true, but you lose allot from 18 to 28, much more them from 135 to 105.

Best,

So I would only go 28-105 if you plan to add a wider lens and commit to a full frame future.

The 28-105 is a very good lens, but the 18-135 is also very good. Personally, I think the 18-135 is the better choice with the K70 if for no other reason than the wide end of the lens. You will lose a lot from 18-28.

On crop frame there is big difference in angle of view going from 28mm down to 18mm. I think you made the right choice.

For me, a 28mm is a bit of an odd duck on crop. My 28mm prime spends most of its time in a drawer.

For me, the 28-105 is such a good piece of glass it'd be plausible to have it on my K-S2 or K-30, but only if I was also bringing the DA15. It's such a small lens, that's plausible.

It also works when paired with the DA 21.

However, the 18-135 is an excellent lens with which to start - it is unlikely that you will be disappointed. Over a period of months or a year, you can make use of its wide range to find out which are your preferred focal lengths, and then make an informed personal decision about your next lens purchase.

I have used my DFA28-105 *a lot* recently on my KP, and it's unbelievably good. I'd go for that if you can and get something else for the wide end. Beyond the DA15 and DA21 already mentioned, the DA12-24 also comes to mind.

Really? Don't you ever upgrade to FF and FA43 then

To me, the DFA 28-105 is an excellent all-purpose zoom on FF, but I agree with the others, you would want to supplement it with something wider on APS-C (e.g., DA 15 or DA 21).

I've had both and I would stay with the 18-135 and save that money and add to it to buy a prime. The 28-105 is a bit better to my eye, but not that much. And both ends of the 18-135 give that something extra in field of view and/or zoom.

Try limiting your use of the 18-135 to 28-105 for a few days. See if the range is something you could deal with. Essentially your giving up nearly all wide angle use and a bit of additional telephoto range for a future use that may or may not happen.

If you're not into shooting at wide angle FOVs, the DFA 28-105 would be fine. But if you want to shoot wider than 28mm, all the options that are as good as the DFA 28-105 are going to cost even more than DA 18-135. Plus, if you do a fair amount of wide angle shooting, you're condemning yourself to constant lens changes. Your main zoom should cover the focal lengths you shoot the majority of the time (which for most people is a standard zoom for whatever format they're shooting). If you enjoy swapping lenses you might as well shoot with primes.

I am very pleased with my 18-135. I don't have a DFA 28-105, but I do have a FA 28-105, which I got as a "fallback" solution for when Dark Image Syndrome hit my K-30; the last few months, when I finally did have to go to that solution, I really missed the 18-28 range on my K-30, and I was very glad to be able to use the 18-135 again when I purchased a KP.

I use the DFA 28-105 on crop as my main lens (yes, it's superb) supplemented with a 14mm Prime (Samyang) and the DA 18-55 WRII. I got the 18-55 as a kit, so next to nothing, and it is very useful. Of course I'll use the 14mm for the best quality when needed, but the little zoom does the job well for many situations (generally ideally more stopped down , F8-F11).

So you could swap the order to the kit with an 18-55 option, and get the 28-105 also. Going forwards there are a number of choices for the 55 or 70-300 range.

I rationalized a 28-105mm purchase wth the idea of a body upgrade and the newer lens design. The lens works great on my K3ii! I never wanted the 18-135mm so am no help. A 20-40mm ltd. is my normal, and I’m not a frequent WA user. The 28-105mm is an excellent value, especially if you are contemplating FF in the future. Dittoes on the 14mm Samyang prime mentioned above!
